The theme for today’s chat was “The Next Generation of Doctors.” When I read this, I wasn’t sure what to expect. It definitely sounded like an interesting topic, and it proved to be one. Here are the questions that were asked, and some of my favorite responses:
Topic One: Who are the emerging leaders you admire for their ideas in shaping the future of medicine? Why? Share resources!
T1: A leader I admire is @erictopol as he is showing the way to a new personal healthcare & how to do it. Vision + Practical Use. #HITsm

T1: I’m pretty inspired by the efforts of @neel_shah and his work founding @costsofcare. Neel was a moderator of a chat last year.#HITsm — Chad Johnson (@OchoTex) January 25, 2013
t1 – tough to not vote for @fredtrotter – if all he did was #docgraph, he would qualify, and this is just his latest effort #HITsm — Brian S. McGowan PhD (@BrianSMcGowan) January 25, 2013
T1: When I think of emerging leadership shaping medicine’s future, I think of non-MDs like @reginaholliday @epatientdave and @hugooc #HITsm

Topic Two: Do you think new ways of learning will attract different types of personalities to the field of medicine?
New docs must remember the importance of eye contact/connection with patients in digital age. So easy to forget but so important. #HITsm — Dr Scott Finkelstein (@ConsanoCMO) January 25, 2013
T2: There already different personalities in medicine. Rads, surgeons, primary care, anesthesiologists, informatics… all diff #HITsm — Chad Johnson (@OchoTex) January 25, 2013
T2 – our iPad program is bringing in more tech savvy students – helps foster innovation with technology in the curriculum #HITsm
— Warren Wiechmann (@warrenwiechmann) January 25, 2013
Topic Three: How can the next generation of doctors learn from patients who are active through social media?
T3 Patients are more data savvy but we have to be mindful of how they interpret all this. Med students should study this process. #HITsm
— Dr Saif Abed (@Saif_Abed) January 25, 2013
T3: Social media is about listening & engagement – valuable skills for a physician to learn & remember #HITsm — TigerText (@TigerTextApp) January 25, 2013
T3 epatients are already teaching MDs what issues are important to them.We need to teach MDs to listen to them through SM as well #HITsm — Warren Wiechmann (@warrenwiechmann) January 25, 2013
T3: Social media is not just about conversations – docs can learn from patients’ apps, sensors, real-time data #HITSM

Topic Four: What does the next generation of doctors think of Quantified Self? How will the role of hte docotr change because of #OS?
T4: #QuantifiedSelf real-time data enables monitoring, prevention. Needed for chronic diseases, aging boomers. #HITsm
— Gautam Jaggi (@GautamJaggi) January 25, 2013
T4 we need to teach students about Quantified Self – pts coming in with data that we don’t know what to do with = bad pt care #HITsm — Warren Wiechmann (@warrenwiechmann) January 25, 2013
T4 I’m a bit concerned that #QS will depersonalize medicine #HITsm — Ryan Madanick, MD (@RyanMadanickMD) January 25, 2013
T4: We need to be careful…data is useless unless it’s analyzed and integrated carefully and continually #HITsm
