The final image this holiday week comes from a tweet shared by David Chou. In his tweet e shares an image of some incredible companies that were founded out of a garage. Hard to argue with these companies and the success they’ve garnered:
When I look at this image I try to think of any massive healthcare companies have been started out of a garage. I couldn’t think of any off hand. Then I started to wonder if that’s a good or a bad thing. Would love to hear your thoughts.
While I don’t know if any are seeing patients in their garage, there are currently about one thousand physician entrepreneurs starting our own direct primary care practices. See https://www.dpcfrontier.com/mapper/
Brian,
Interesting comparison of garage entrepreneurs to DPC physicians. Will this movement be transformative the way the companies listed above have been?
Hey John, entrepreneurs don’t have to start in a garage, Facebook and Dell started in dorm rooms at college. Will DPC be transformative? If it removes the burden from doctors regarding payments and allows them to practice preventative medicine – YES!!!!!!!!!!
Barry,
I think it’s proven that it’s done that. However, to be transformative to healthcare then it needs to be able to scale across the system. Or at least have a transformative effective on the system. Of course, at the micro level it can be transformative to that one doctor and their patients.
In Toronto, Canada – you’ve got PointClickCare! Now the most widely used EHR in senior care, but came out of the proverbial garage.
Emma,
Nice example. PointClickCare has done a great job in their market. I didn’t know their origins so thanks for sharing.
