EMR and HIPAA Tries Video

This may turn out to be the smartest or dumbest idea that I’ve ever tried here on EMR and HIPAA. Although, I’ve never been one afraid to try something and look stupid. I think that’s one of my greatest strengths. I’m willing to try something crazy even if it doesn’t work. Of course, many times it turns into something really great. Hopefully this turns out to be the later.

I’ve been seeing so many people doing video and so many people interested in video. So, I decided I’d give it a try. I’m attacking EMR video in 2 different ways. First, I’ve launched a new EHR, EMR and Healthcare IT videos website. We’ve already posted 32 different EMR and EHR videos to the site and it’s seeing some great traffic. Of course, if you know of other videos you think we should post to the site, please do let us know. We’ll keep on posting the best EMR, EHR and Healthcare IT videos that we find.

The second part of this plan is that I’m planning to make a number of EMR related videos myself. In my true boot-strapper style they won’t be huge productions. Instead, they’ll focus on the content (like I do on this blog). At first, I’m planning to do the videos in a question and answer style. I’ve already got a number of questions from Twitter and a previous post I did, but feel free to post other questions you’d like me to answer in the comments of this post.

Plus, I figured I might as well go all in and do the video live. That’s right, I’ll be broadcasting the video I create live to my EMR and HIPAA uStream channel. I’ll be starting the video tomorrow (5/24/11) at about 2 PM PST (5 PM EST). So, feel free to connect to the live streaming video of me answering questions. Plus, when you connect you can ask questions of me live. Hopefully a few of you show up so that I’m not just talking to myself. Of course, if you don’t then I’ll try to still post the video after the event as well.

In fact, I tested out the system today and recorded this video. Excuse the t-shirt and baseball cap. Tomorrow I’ll see if I can upgrade the wardrobe a little bit.

What do you think of this idea? Is it insane? Do you like it? Are you looking forward to the free advice and consulting?

  • While I enjoy reading your posts, the sheer number of emr websites that you run makes it incredibly cumbersome to keep up with all of your content. I understand that you may have adopted this business model to up the ante from an advertising revenue perspective, but I would think that you are actually diluting your brand and SEO rankings. And as a consistent reader of this blog, I’d rather everything emr be all in one place – preferably sorted by category instead of a whole new (and one SEO term variance) domain.

  • Hi Jared,
Thanks for reading and for the feedback. I’m definitely cognizant of the potential problems you describe. Part of what I’m doing is working to aggregate all the content on http://www.healthcarescene.com I still have a ways to go, but it will become the main source of all the other sites posts and will eventually be able to be filtered by topic or category. At least that’s the vision of where I’d like it to go.

  • I get that feeling that you feel like your ideas have outgrown the name emrandhipaa.com or even emrandehr.com, but from an SEO perspective you will take a major major hit if you transition to healthcarescene.com. You’ll get a hit if you have duplicate content across sites at any point. Google gives SEO love to older domain names AND actually having the search term in the domain (eg emr, EHR, hipaa). I know that I still think of your brand as emrandhipaa even though your topics have matured along with the HIT industry. So please weigh those risks before jumping the shark.

  • Jared,
No, both of these sites will remain here. I would be dumb to move them over for all the reasons you site and more. Just their content will be aggregated on HealthcareScene.com in some way. I’m deciding the best way to do it (which is why it’s not done yet). It might just be a summary with a link or possibly even just the headlines.

The duplicate content is mostly a myth. I can’t find the link to the videos where Matt Cutts addresses the issue, but there are definitely ways to do it without taking the SEO hit.

You can definitely expect EMRandHIPAA.com and EMRandEHR.com to be the mainstays where I write like I have been doing. Although, I’m likely to bring on other perspectives too to keep it interesting. Much like I’ve done with Katherine Rourke and Neil Versel.

The other sites won’t generally encroach on the same topic areas as I’ve covered on the 2 main sites. Plus, most of them will be written by people other than myself. I’ll just be providing them a platform for them to write about their ideas. http://www.happyemrdoctor.com and http://www.meaningfulhitnews.com are examples of that. Dr. West and Neil have complete editorial control over the content. I just assist them with the operations and try to help more people hear their unique voices.

I’m definitely at my peak for content creation. I don’t think you’ll see more blogs out of me unless they’re like the Dr. West and Neil partnerships.

  • Funny, I’m testing the same thing (Ustream).

One challenge is sharing/showing your desktop on screen. I have an answer, but now I can’t find the software…

Another challenge is taking calls, say via Skype.
Answer appears to be Virtual Audio Cable.

Finally, did you know you can have it stream to your facebook page?

  • Hi John,
I’ve used Ustream for a few other things and really like it. It does have limitations for sure. Although, I’m going to keep it simple with one camera, questions in the chat and/or Twitter and go from there. We’ll see how it goes.

I did see that you could stream to Facebook, I’m going to also add a post to my site, so visitors to my site can watch live as well. We’ll see if anyone shows up. Either way, I’ll record it.

  • I like Jared’s comment because it made me think of sites like The Huffington Post, which grew out of a little acorn idea that Ariana Huffington had a short while ago, which then took off and is one of the most successful blog sites out there today. Putting the posts all together on a single page with some pictures? Hmmm…. PS — Love the T-shirt! Woohoo! PF!

  • I like the idea of being the Ariana Huffington of healthcare blogs. Hopefully that’s an apt comparison and I can be successful as well.

I wondered if anyone would notice the shirt. Coincidence I tell you. It was just what I had on that day.
