New Online Market Place for EMR Transcription Services

Having this blog has given me the opportunity to talk with a number of different transcription companies over the years. I think one thing has become pretty clear. The face of transcription is certainly changing quickly, but the need for transcription is still going to be there for a long while to come. Although, it won’t be the same process of transcription as we know today. Transcription and EMR will start to come together more and more.

Many of us (including myself) were quick to use transcription cost savings as a way to justify the purchase of an EMR. What I think we’ve seen over the 5 or so years I’ve been writing about EMR is that transcription can still be a fantastic compliment to an EMR system. EMR cost justification will often have to come from some of the other EMR benefits.

With that as background, I was quite interested in a company called myMonolog that I met at the Mobile Health Expo. They’re creating an online marketplace for finding and utilizing a transcription service. I’ll admit that I’m not an expert in transcription, but I like the idea that you have a marketplace of transcription providers to choose from and you can see the ratings and reviews from other people who have used that transcription service. I also like that they have an app for Smart Phones to be able to record, send and view the transcriptions.

I’d still like to see them do some deep integrations between their system and EMR vendors, but I think it’s an interesting idea to create a marketplace for transcription services. Plus, if you choose to change transcription service providers, you can still use the same interface with a new provider. Or if your transcription company gets behind, you can just hire another transcription provider to catch you up.

myMonolog has offered Physicians, Nurses or administrators that read this site a 1 week free trial of transcription services if you use the promotion code: “emrandhipaa” when registering. If you need transcription services, try it out and let me know what you think of the service.

  • Our company has a Document Management Software that can be used as a EMR or EHR software. What’s the process of becoming CCHIT Certified?

  • Michael,
You can get CCHIT certified details: http://www.cchit.org/get_certified Although, I’m not sure why you’d choose CCHIT when there is Drummond Group and InfoGard out there to certify an EHR as well. They use the same NIST scripts provided by the government and provide the same access to the EHR stimulus money.

CCHIT has a full certification, but that adds no value to the doctor so ignore it and go for the ARRA ONC-ATCB certification.

That said, you might find it a challenge for a document management system to become certified.

  • John, you are magnanimous, but the idea that a document management enterprise with no domain expertise wants to enter the EMR market is insulting and emblematic of how misunderstood our needs are. I hope there is more to it.

  • I’ll take that as a compliment Brian. I know of some other document management software that have put a lot of other pieces together with the document management to create a pretty compelling user experience. I’ll be generous and assume that Michael has done this also. However, even those have a hard time becoming a certified EHR.

The fact is that many doctors see this as the better EHR option (certification or not). It’s hard for me to argue against some of the workflow benefits of such a system. Is it technically defined as an EMR? Is it the best long term solution for Doctors? I don’t know, but I know that many doctors love it.

  • John,
Thanks for sharing your views about myMonolog and its really nice to hear about their marketplace for transcription services.

Sorry for interrupting into you that we do also have a application which can integrate( get the dictations) EMR software via HL7.

Physician also will gets their transcripts in the same.

Also some of our clients are asking us to log into their EMR application. Because they are not up to the level of using EMRs.

    Any suggestions!!!

  • There are some EMR vendors that have the transcription stuff built into their application. They even provide transcription companies a login which will allow them to add their transcriptions without really having access to the patient chart or identifiable patient information. This might be one way to get it done. DoctorsPartner is one example of a company that has this feature built into their system.
