In the US, today is Thanksgiving and so I thought it would be fun to show a bit of gratitude to each of my children on each of my blogs. Feel free to skip this post if you’re looking for Healthcare IT content on Thanksgiving. We’ll be back with our regularly scheduled content on Monday.

This probably says a lot about me, but I decided to put my oldest child on my oldest blog and so forth down the line based on age of the child and blog. With that alignment, EMRandHIPAA.com is host to my first child. Most of you don’t know, that my brother and I have casually been writing a daddy blog called Crash Dad where I refer to my kids as Crash Kids. So, on this blog I want to show some gratitude for Crash Kid #1.

Crash Kid #1 just oozes creativity. His passion for creating and designing is inspiring to me since it’s the opposite of me. Ever since he could talk he’s been surprising us with the way he looks at life. I’m grateful that he always teaches me what’s most important in life and doesn’t let me allow other things to distract. Talking with him before bed is the perfect way for me to end the day and I’m grateful to him for that.

Happy Thanksgiving! Who are you grateful for this day?

Today is a day of real gratitude for me. I love Thanksgiving and the time to enjoy family and taking time out to be grateful for all the many blessings in my life. One of my greatest blessings is to be a full time blogger. I feel so lucky to be able to do something as amazing and impactful as blogging. Of course, I couldn’t live this dream if it weren’t for you the reader. So, I’m really grateful to so many of you who have supported my blogs for so long even with all my frailties and mistakes. Thank you!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Last week I did a #HITThanks post as part of the move to show some gratitude for all the great things that are happening in healthcare IT. Jennifer Dennard also followed up with her post talking about being thankful for Patient Portals. However, the thing I’m most thankful for are all the readers and supporters of this site. I sometimes find myself shaking with joy as I think how lucky I am that I make a living as a blogger. None of this would be possible if it weren’t for all of you. So, a big heartfelt thank you to all of you.

I’m also really thankful to be embarking on the new journey after adding Healthcare IT Central to the Healthcare Scene family. It’s a really exciting time for me to see the bond between the two websites grow. I think we’re in for a really special ride and I’m grateful that I have the opportunity to see it first hand.

I hope everyone has a great day today. I know I’ll be enjoying some time with family, amazing food, and football.

HIE as Avenue for New Patient Acquisition

I’ve mostly taken a bit of time off to enjoy Thanksgiving with the family. I hope you’re doing the same and enjoying the start of the holidays.

For those of you still grinding away, I thought I’d throw out a thought that one of my readers told me in an email discussion we were having. They suggested that at some point they believed that the HIE (Health Information Exchange) would be a way to get new patients. They admitted that it wasn’t the original intent of the HIE, but was still a likely outcome.

I’ve been thinking quite a bit lately about how to drive new patients to a doctors office for my new Physia venture. Although, I have to admit that I hadn’t been thinking about HIE as a way to get new patients. I’ll be chewing on that a little bit this holiday weekend. I’d love to hear other non-traditional ways you’re using to find new patients.

Full of Gratitude on A Great Thanksgiving

A beautiful Thanksgiving is nearly over, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t at least drop a few sentences of gratitude for readers of EMR and HIPAA on Thanksgiving. I live a wonderful life. I have a fantastic wife that is a wonderful compliment to me. She’s had a lot more to put up with me traveling so much lately for HealthcareScene.com and she’s been a wonderful supporter of me. I have 3 wonderful kids that are incredibly fun and bring so much joy into my life.

Lately I’ve been talking with a lot of people and they invariably ask me what I do. My simple answer is: I’m a blogger. Many times I comment how I never thought I’d be a blogger when I grew up. In fact, if you’d asked me a year and a half ago when I quit my day job if I’d be a full time blogger I probably would have laughed. I’m certainly the beneficiary of a little bit of luck, some great timing, and a decent amount of hard work. Although, I’ve had so much fun doing most of it that it’s often hard for me to call it work.

All in all, I have so much to be grateful for. I’m particularly grateful for all those who read EMR and HIPAA and my other sites and the advertisers who support my site as well. No doubt, none of this would be possible with out great readers. Thanks for reading. Thanks for commenting. Thanks for participating. Thanks to all the advertisers that have supported this site. As I’ve discussed recently with a number of advertisers, my goal is to provide really great value so we have long term relationships with our advertisers. For the most part, we’ve been able to do just that. So, Thank You!

A Lot to Be Thankful For at EMR and HIPAA

Today has been a pretty wonderful day for me. I played some Turkey bowl this morning, had a wonderful meal with my wife and kids and then watched The Grinch in the afternoon. A nice relaxing day with the people that I love the most.

As I think about my life, I have so many things to be thankful for. In fact, I think I take them for granted far too often. Right after I married my wife I took her on a trip back to Guatemala where she had lived for a year and a half. During our visit we visited one of her favorite friends. Turns out this lady lived in one of the poorest parts of Guatemala in what amounted to a river bed with some metal sheet roofs held up by old washing machines and stove tops stacked up.

Even amidst these amazing conditions, the wife gave some money to a child to run and buy some soda (since I’m sure they never usually had this) so that she could offer her guests (us) something wonderful. It was an amazing gesture and a great lesson. Although, what was also amazing was how this wonderful family was incredibly happy even in such difficult conditions.

As I think about wonderful people like this that I’ve met throughout my life, it makes me even more grateful for what I’ve been given.

This year I’ve also been reflecting on my decision to quit my day job and become a full time blogger and entrepreneur. While I can’t say that it’s not been without its challenges, I’m incredibly satisfied with my decision. In fact, it’s hard for me to imagine ever going back to work for someone again. I guess there’s probably some situation where it would be fun, but right now I’m incredibly happy with a wonderful job that most the time barely feels like work.

Of course, none of what I’m doing would be possible if it weren’t for great readers and great advertisers. I think this site has some of the best and smartest healthcare IT people that exist. There’s so many things that I don’t know, but I believe there’s few things that readers of this blog don’t know. My only hope is that I offer as much to my readers as they offer to me. The advertisers that support EMR and HIPAA are fantastic. Thanks to each one of you who support my efforts. Many of you have been advertising on here for years. I very much appreciate it!

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. We indeed have so much to be grateful for.
