Healthcare Scene at HIMSS 2012

John Lynn is the Founder of the HealthcareScene.com blog network which currently consists of 10 blogs containing over 8000 articles with John having written over 4000 of the articles himself. These EMR and Healthcare IT related articles have been viewed over 16 million times. John also manages Healthcare IT Central and Healthcare IT Today, the leading career Health IT job board and blog. John is co-founder of InfluentialNetworks.com and Physia.com. John is highly involved in social media, and in addition to his blogs can also be found on Twitter: @techguy and @ehrandhit and LinkedIn.

As many of you know, I posted my HIMSS 2012 session schedule on EMR and EHR a few weeks back. Sadly, many of those sessions have been taken off my schedule, but a number of really good ones still remain. I just counted 27 other meetings with vendors the week of HIMSS. I think it’s fair to say I’m doing my part to see as many as I can to provide you some really interesting coverage.

Outside of that hectic schedule, you’ll also be able to find me at a number of events (mostly social media related):
Meet the Bloggers Panel – This is happening Wed 2/22 4:00-5:00PM at the HIMSS Social Media Center. This will be a fun panel for me with two people I know quite well and love: Jennifer Dennard and Neil Versel. Plus, Carissa Caramanis O’Brien who I don’t know that well, but look forward to meeting as well. If you like social media or blogging, you’ll enjoy this.

HIMSS Social Media Center Genius Bar – I’ll be there Tuesday, 11:30 am-12:00 pm, Wednesday 10:30 am-11:00 am, and Thursday 11:30 am-12:00 pm at the HIMSS Social Media Center. Stop by and ask any question you want. You can make an appointment for it here.

New Media Meetup at HIMSS Sponsored by simplifyMD – We’re almost out of space for this event so I’ve stopped any major promotion of it. It amazes me the wonderful people on the list. Soon I’ll probably have to change it to a wait list signup once we reach capacity.

I also wanted to point out some of the interesting things that sponsors of EMR and HIPAA are doing at HIMSS. I just asked them for info late, so a number of my advertisers haven’t been able to get me anything yet. If they send me their info, I’ll update the post.

I’m really excited to announce the 3rd annual New Media Meetup at HIMSS 2012. Last year’s event had an amazing turnout in Orlando and I expect this year’s will be even better with a whole bunch of interesting new and old faces. It’s quite frankly my favorite part of HIMSS thanks to the amazing people who are there.

Everyone is welcome at the event. Maybe you participate in New Media (Blogger, Tweeter, LinkedIn, Facebook, etc) or maybe you just enjoy consuming other people’s media (like this blog) or maybe you’re interested in using New Media for yourself or your company. Everyone is welcome to attend and network with others interested in New Media. I’m excited this year to welcome the #HITsm and #hcsm crowd that will be out in full force I’m sure.

If that isn’t enough reason to attend, I’m really happy to have teamed up with simplifyMD to sponsor the New Media Meetup at HIMSS Las Vegas. The event will be on Wednesday 2/22 7:00-9:00 PM at the awesome BB King’s Blues Club in the Mirage Hotel (A short walk across the street from the Venetian/Sands). That’s right: an open bar, Live Music with a dance floor, and amazing people.

UPDATE: Ozmosis has come on board again this year to sponsor the giveaways at the Meetup. They’ve provided 3 Kindle Fire that we’ll give away to 3 lucky people who attend. Read more about Ozmosis and see pictures of the awesome BB King venue for the event on EMR and EHR.

Please register for the event so we know how many to expect. I expect we’ll max out registrations for the event like we did last year, so register now before it’s too late.

I couldn’t agree more with @MattA_PCMH. I’m obviously biased since I organized the event, but the good part is that it far exceeded my expectations. You never know what’s going to happen when the people attending the event essentially came from two blog posts and a bunch of tweets and retweets. As I mentioned at the meetup, It’s also an amazing illustration of the power of social media.

I was highly impressed with the quality of the people that attended. Besides the fact that it’s fun to meet people IRL (in real life) that you feel like you know because you follow them on Twitter and/or their blog, it’s also neat to meet people from across the spectrum of healthcare IT that’s represented at HIMSS. Despite the various differences and backgrounds, we all had one collective bond: interest in New Media (Blogs, Twitter, Facebook, etc). I think that’s what makes this meetup unique, interesting and a lot of fun!

A really big thanks to our main sponsor MEDecision for the food, drinks, venue and Flip video camera giveaways. Thanks also to Ozmosis for sponsoring the iPad giveaway. I think MEDecision must have seen my flip video camera envy, because at the end of the event they were incredibly kind and hooked me up with my own flip video camera. Very classy organization and I can’t wait to see what we can put together for the 3rd Annual New Media Meetup at HIMSS12 in Las Vegas. I told MEDecision we were going to have to go Big since I call Las Vegas home. I’m sure they’ll deliver like they have the past two meetups.

Someone on Twitter also brought up the idea of a Young Professionals meetup at HIMSS. I think I might have to explore this idea a bit more for next year since it would be an interesting compliment to the New Media Meetup. I’ll just have to set the age high enough that I’m considered a young professional.

Now for a few pictures from the New Media Meetup at HIMSS 2011 (click on the pictures twice to see the full picture):

And this video at the tail end of the meetup after most of the people had cleared out, but some familiar faces were still hanging around:

I’m really excited to announce the second annual New Media Meetup at HIMSS 2011. Last year’s event was pretty amazing in Atlanta and I expect this year’s will be just as good and with a whole bunch of interesting new and old faces. It’s one of the most interesting networking events that I did at HIMSS.

If that isn’t enough reason to attend, I’m really happy to have teamed up with MEDecision again this year to sponsor the New Media Meetup at HIMSS Orlando. They’ll be fully catering the event (Translation: Free FOOD) which if it’s anything like last year, you won’t be disappointed at ALL! Not to mention, they’ll be providing an enclosed area in their swanky booth on the main aisle of the exhibition floor for the event.

Ok, now to the gory details. The event will be on Tuesday 2/22 4:30-6:00 PM in Booth 2563 (MEDecision booth). It’s right at the end of the day on Tuesday before you head out to all the other night parties. Grab a bite to eat and meet some really great people.

UPDATE: Thanks to the good people at Ozmosis, we’ll be giving away an iPad at the event. Plus, along with providing all the food and drink, MEDecision has offered up a bunch of FLIP video cameras to giveaway.

Please register for the event so we know how many to expect. At some point we may have to close registrations since their booth can only hold so many, so register now and come join the fun.

Be sure to tell all your Blogger, Twitter and other new media friends about the event. The more people you invite, the better the event will become. I look forward to meeting you all!

Pervasive’s Revenue Cycle Management Solution Video at HIMSS

For one of the New Media Meetups at HIMSS we met at the Pervasive booth on the exhibitor floor. I must admit that I wasn’t quite sure what I’d find at the Pervasive booth, but I’d had a few interactions with the people behind the company and so I was excited to meet them in person.

Turns out when I first got there I was told about how Pervasive was taking the data stuck in EMR software or other healthcare software and was helping revenue cycle management companies extract that data out. I thought what they were doing was pretty interesting and so I caught this video explaining a little bit more about Pervasive:

HIMSS 10 Day 2

Posted on March 1, 2010 I Written By

I’ve survived my second day of HIMSS. This is my first time to HIMSS and so I must admit that I’m a bit overwhelmed. Plus, it’s the first time I’ve been to a conference as “media.” I must admit that it’s really nice to be media at HIMSS. You get access to some things that you don’t normally get to access. Plus, the media room with food and internet has been great since I haven’t had time to breathe, let alone eat.

The problem I’ve had is that there just isn’t enough time while I’m there to write too much content. Plus, it gives me no time to really process the content. So, if you want my latest updates about HIMSS, you can find them on my EMR twitter page.

I went to town on Twitter during the CCHIT town hall. It should give you a good flavor for what the town hall was like. I’m sure I’ll take many of those tweets and make it into a post later. Tomorrow watch Twitter during the ONC town hall. That should be another good one. Also, the John Halamka session will probably be another good Twitter time for me.

Otherwise, the big events for me today was the “Meet the Bloggers” panel which was quite interesting. The coolest part was meeting the readers of this blog in person and also some of the bloggers that I’ve read as well. What’s pretty neat is when someone comes up to me and says, I read you. If you think about it, I have very little idea who actually reads what I write. So, it’s neat to see some actual people talk about your work.

I was also quite happy with how the New Media Meetup at the MEDecision party at the Aquarium went. The venue was fantastic, the food was even better and the people there were even better. My only problem was that I wish that we’d had more time. Although, Colbie Callait was on stage so I didn’t want to miss her either. It was a tough challenge to have. I do like partnering like this and it was nice to meet the people behind MEDecision as well. They are working on an industry model for HIE. I have a feeling their quietly going to be entering the HIE space in a big way.

Lots and lots more I could talk about. However, I’m going to go ahead and save those for future posts (likely next week). No need to overwhelm you with posts. We have plenty of time. I will tell you that I got 2 videos today of Evan Steele, CEO of SRSsoft and also Dr. Doug Fridsma from ONC about the NHIN and CONNECT. I wanted to post it tonight, but since the internet was down in my hotel it will have to be tomorrow or the next day. Something to look forward to.

Tomorrow there’s a lot on my agenda. The John Halamka and ONC sessions that I mentioned previously, a couple more EMR vendor interviews and of course another HIMSS New Media meetup from 4-5 at the MModal booth 1157 sponsored by MxSecure. Come win a free iPod touch at the meetup. Man, it’s going to be another full day. At least tomorrow I think I have an hour or so to check out the floor a little bit.

My Major HIMSS 10 Event Plans

John is highly involved in social media, and in addition to his blogs can also be found on Twitter: @techguy and @ehrandhit and LinkedIn.

I’ll admit that I’m having an interesting challenge figuring out how to manage all of the various things I can do at HIMSS. I’m sure that many others have the same problem. Not to mention managing the mix of all the content that’s coming out and planning my own visit to HIMSS. A great problem to have I think.

For those who are interested in meeting me, here’s a couple places where you will be sure to find me at HIMSS 10:
HIMSS Meet the Blogger Panel – I’ll be on the panel on Monday, March 1st from 3-4:30. This is an incredible panel of people that I highly respect. This should be a really lively discussion.

New Media Meetups at HIMSS 10 – These events are shaping up to be really incredible events. Looking through the list of people who have RSVP’d for the kick off event, it’s going to be a really interesting mix of people. Not to mention Colbie Caillat singing, free food and some great free giveaways. Make sure you Register for the Kick Off Event on Monday, March 1st at the MEDecision party. Thanks to MxSecure and Pervasive for also sponsoring the other meetups.

I’d love to meetup with other people or if you’re an EMR vendor that’s doing something innovative let me know in the comments or drop me a note on my Contact Us page.

There are so many events I’m interested in attending. However, no doubt I’ll have some fun at the CCHIT Town Hall Meeting and I’ll be hoping that the David Blumenthal’s HIMSS Keynote is meaningful.

Are there any must see sessions or events? Let me know of any events you think I should attend and cover on this blog.

Also, if you’re interested in following my HIMSS 10 coverage, you can sign up for my EMR and HIPAA email list, check out my posts on EMR and EHR, and follow my tweets on my @ehrandhit and @techguy twitter accounts. It will basically be like you’re there with me.

Colbie Caillat to Perform at New Media Meetup During HIMSS

Side Note: I’m still looking for 1 or 2 more sponsors of my coverage of HIMSS. Let me know if you’re interested.

I’m really excited to announce that 2010 Grammy Award winning artist Colbie Caillat will be the entertainment at the New Media Kick Off Event at MEDecision Party at the Aquarium. I just love Colbie Caillat’s song “Bubly” and the song off her new album “Fallin’ for You.” She’s the perfect singer for a networking event like this at HIMSS.

Signups for the New Media Kick Off Event at HIMSS are full of a lot of really interesting people. If you’re planning to attend, make sure you register here. Food, Drinks, Colbie Caillat and great people. That’s what I’m talking about.

About Colbie Caillat
Armed simply with her dusky vocals and acoustic guitar, Colbie Caillat and her homespun music continue to resonate with listeners and win new fans. Little more than a year after the release of her nearly double platinum debut album “CoCo,” Caillat has quickly made such an enduring impact that USA Today declared the California girl a vital part of “a new wave of troubadours luring fans of all ages into a peaceful, easy feeling.” At the core of Caillat’s appeal are her honesty and lack of pretense. And her intense desire to create a body of work that resonates from the first note to the last.

“CoCo” debuted at No. 5 on Billboard’s Top 200 albums chart and remained in the top 20 of the chart more than half a year after the CD’s release. The single “Bubbly” spent a staggering 14 weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Adult Top 40 chart and four weeks atop the Adult Contemporary chart. “Bubbly” has also been certified platinum; signaling sales of more than 2.6 million downloads. Second single “Realize,” about a friend, who was secretly in love with Caillat, was also a huge hit. And the third is proving to be the charm as “Little Things” is following the path of its predecessors.

Since the album’s debut, Caillat has been a constant fixture on the road in the U.S., Europe, Australia and Asia. She’s alternated between headlining her own sold-out concerts and opening for such artists as John Mayer, one of her major influences. When she’s not on stage, she usually can be found with guitar in hand, writing.

**Disclaimer: The New Media Meetup is an unofficial party during HIMSS and is not sponsored or organized by HIMSS.
