HIMSS15 Social Media and Influencer Thoughts

I think this has been the case the past couple years. The Tuesday of HIMSS seems to always be my day of social media. This year was no different. This was highlighted by a meetup that Shahid Shah and myself did at the HIMSS spot. At first I wasn’t sure if anyone would show for the event. Luckily, 1-2 people were there early and so at least we wouldn’t be talking to ourselves. In fact, Shahid asked for those that weren’t there for the meetup to free up the seats for those that were there for it. Luckily, when I wasn’t watching a whole bunch of people showed up and the event was standing room only. I guess Shahid can really draw a crowd.

What was impressive was the mix of the audience. There was a large group of some of the most influential people in social media (I won’t name names since there were too many and I’ll forget someone), along with a number of newer people. I love that mix and particularly love the new people that are still finding their way. Sometimes they seem a bit like dear in the headlights. That’s ok. That’s part of the fun of learning.

What’s clear to me is that social influencing as really matured for many people, but there are still a lot of people that are trying to figure it out. It’s amazing to see the difference. I’ll be interested to watch this evolve. I still see so much opportunity with it and many aren’t taking advantage of it.

Then, my night was capped off with the New Media Meetup at HIMSS15. This is the 6th year I’ve hosted this event and it seems to get better each year. I’m always humbled by the list of people that register to attend. Plus, I’m extremely appreciative of Stericycle and Patient Prompt that basically through a big party for all these amazing people. It’s always amazing to see the broad spectrum of people that attend and how down to earth they are even given many of their significant social influence. Plus, what an amazing preview for the Healthcare IT Marketing and PR Conference.

I didn’t go into many details on what was at the session or who attending the New Media Meetup, but you can get a lot of that information by checking out the #HITMC hashtag. Thanks to all of my new and old social media friends that made today special. I keep learning from you.

I’ll leave this with just one insight that really hit home to me when I shared it in the meetup. Really caring about the people you’re connecting with, the topics you’re sharing and the work you’re doing really comes through in social media. If you’re faking it, people will usually see that. Plus, really caring about those you connect with on social media and the things you share will change your life in really amazing ways.

Reminds me of the wrestler, Jessie Ventura who became governor of Minnesota. One time I heard him say he didn’t have to have a good memory, because he always said what he thought and never told things that were half true. On social media, if you’re faking it, it makes it hard to remember all the things you’ve faked. If you’re authentic and real, it makes it so much easier.

For those of you planning to attend the annual HIMSS 2014 conference in Orlando, I’m excited to share the details of the 5th Annual New Media Meetup at HIMSS. Just last week I got a note from someone who attended the first New Meetup at HIMSS Atlanta (2010). It’s amazing the connections you can make at this event and that they’re still in tact 5 years later. No doubt this is why the New Media Meetup is the highlight of HIMSS for me.

We’ve secured a lovely venue for the event at the Tommy Bahama restaurant inside Pointe Orlando a short walk from the convention center. We’ll have the usual food, drinks, and lively conversation. Plus, you’ll get a chance to take multiple selfies with your favorite Health IT social media rock stars.

Social Media Day at HIMSS 2012

Today I had an amazing series of meeting with really smart people. Many of my findings from those meetings will be featured in blog posts over the next month after HIMSS. I’ve come across some trends and ideas that I think readers will be really excited to hear about.

However, I’d say that today was marked by social media at HIMSS 2012 for me. Here’s a quick run down of the social media events I participated in.

First, Shahid Shah, the Healthcare IT Guy and Jennifer Dennard joined me in holding the Genius Bar in the social media center. It’s been interesting to see the variety of people that have come by the genius sessions. I think the idea of having a genius bar is a really good one and I think the HIMSS social media staff have liked the idea a lot as well. I can see it really expanding and do even better than we’ve done this year. Although, this isn’t surprising since we through the idea together a week or two before HIMSS.

Immediately after the genius bar, they held the #HITsm Tweetup. It was fantastic fun with so many familiar faces. There was only one main downside to the Tweetup. The internet connection wasn’t working and so I could only do it on my phone. The internet situation has been a problem for me for a lot of HIMSS. I can’t say how annoying it is to try and cover HIMSS and not have a decent internet connection. It’s pretty hit or miss from my experience. I’m not sure why.

Regardless of the internet connection, it was a pretty interesting experience to do a tweetup live. I almost wish it would have been a silent tweetup. Basically, random laughs and what not. Either way though, at least MelSmithJones was thinking inside the box and we got her to think inside the box. #insidejoke

In the afternoon, I participated in a Meet the Bloggers panel with Jennifer Dennard, Neil Versel and Carissa Caramanis O’Brien. I think the audience got some decent information from what was said. I must admit that one thing I loved was looking into the audience and knowing so many people who had come to hear what we had to say. A number of people said some kind things to me about the event which were really appreciated. Although, my favorite part was a lot of the individual discussions I had with so many people after the Meet the Blogger panel.

Then, to top the night off we had the really great 3rd Annual New Media Meetup. I think we had about 120 people show up to the event. The band was admittedly too loud for a really good discussion, but as someone said on Twitter at least they were a good band. A really big thanks to simplifyMD and Ozmosis for sponsoring the event. simplifyMD even stepped up and decided to add some food at the event. They were outstanding to work with and the three people who won Kindle Fire’s from Ozmosis were absolutely excited.

At the core of all the social media mentioned above is: People!

Meeting with and connecting with interesting, smart, unique, talented people is always a wonderful experience and that’s why I love social media.

EHR Growth, HIT and EHR Standards, Hospital EMR User Tracking Bill, and MGMA Conference in Las Vegas

Time for my roundup of interesting topics seen throughout the interwebs and related to EHR and healthcare IT.

@Allscripts
Astounding growth in use of EHRs – 5x in 2.5 yrs – Dr. Mostashari at #ACE2011 (via Skype) – does your doc use an EHR?

I’d like to see where Dr. Mostashari got those numbers. I think there’s little doubt that EHR use is up. If we say that 2.5 years ago it was at about 15%, then that would mean that using his growth number we’re now at 75%. That seems way too high for me.

@shelleypetersen – Michelle Petersen
US are starting to standardise vendor requirements for #healthit and language used in #EHR regions, important move

Is this a misread of what’s being done with meaningful use and EHR certification? I haven’t seen standards really emerge for most of this. I guess it does say “starting.”

Hospital EMR User Tracking Bill
Don’t ask me why, but this post about a CA Bill Requiring Hospital EMR Software to Track Users came across my tweet stream as well even though it was posted back in June. I guess that’s one thing I love about Twitter. It can bring back interesting content that you wouldn’t have seen otherwise.

After reading the post, I wondered if the CA bill passed or not. I’m guessing not. Although, I’m still shocked by the article’s comments that even an expensive Epic install at Kaiser can’t meet the requirements of reporting on what data for a patient in an EHR has been deleted and who’s accessed that patient data.

MGMA Conference in Las Vegas
I’ll admit that I’ve wanted to go to the MGMA conference for a couple years now. This year I’m lucky that it’s hosted in the beautiful Las Vegas. So, I’ll definitely be there enjoying the event. I’ve been thinking about doing a New Media Meetup at MGMA like I do at HIMSS. Are any readers interested if I put it together? If there’s only a few of you, we could just do a dinner or something. Let me know in the comments or on my contact us page.

Social Media Sessions at HIMSS and Other HIMSS Talk

As many of you probably know, I’m a big fan of social media. Certainly it’s been a great way for me to market the content I create on my websites, but it is much more than that for me. Social media (like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc) are a great way for me to connect and interact with other people. I’ve heard so many people tell me they don’t understand Twitter. I like to explain that Twitter is about being able to connect with people related to almost any topic imaginable. It gives you a way to follow them and to communicate with them in a passive and interesting way. It’s incredibly powerful.

Plus, Twitter and other social media is fun. You get the chance to learn a lot from those around you. Not to mention those connections can do some powerful things. I’ve gotten everything from free conference attendance to free graphic design to finding my accountant on Twitter. It’s a beautiful thing if you use it right.

The problem most people have is that they don’t know how to use it and their afraid to get started. Well, I will tell you it does take some commitment of time to make it effective. However, it’s been well worth it for me.

Back on topic, the HIMSS 11 conference in Orlando is going to be a great event to see some of the power of Twitter. You can do it by following what people are saying about HIMSS (and the hashtag #himss11) or check out some of the various HIMSS Twitter lists. You don’t even have to be on Twitter to consume the content. It’s pretty interesting to follow even now.

HIMSS also has created a social media pavillion on the exhibit floor where they’ll be having a bunch of social media center sessions. Here’s a sample of some of the session titles, “Twitter Created the New Radio Star” (so true), “Physicians and Meaningful Use: What We Are Seeing in Social Media” and “Blogging as a Career: Strategies for Clinicians and Health IT Bloggers” (by Dr. Kim) and lots more. Cesar from HIMSS always puts together a lot of interesting social media content at HIMSS.

Of course, I put together the New Media Meetup at HIMSS to also bring together some of the smartest and most interesting people using New Media in healthcare. The event has nearly reached capacity and I’m also happy to say that we’ve added a new sponsor, Ozmosis, who will be giving away an iPad at the event. Pretty sweet if I do say so myself.

If you can’t tell, I have HIMSS on the brain right now. Maybe it’s because I’m inundated by all the PR people asking to meet with me at HIMSS. The good thing is that my schedule is nearly full and so it’s easier for me to say sorry when the schedule is full. Although, there’s always more room to add to my list of possible parties to attend. So, if you know of any I should attend, let me know.

I was also amazed by the list of government officials that will be attending HIMSS. That’s pretty much all of the high level health leadership that exists in the US government. The only person that they could add to top what’s on that list is Obama and/or Biden.

I won’t go over all the other HIMSS sessions that look interesting, including some interesting HIMSS 11 keynote speakers. All in all I think it will be a great event where I’m running all over the place. However, I plan to run quickly between places, but to have slow, valuable conversations with those with whom I do meet. I’d rather have 10 valuable conversations with smart people than 100 shallow conversations with random people.

If you’re attending HIMSS, what gets you excited?

P.S. Here are the links to some of my various social media profiles:
@ehrandhit – Twitter feed of EMR and healthcare IT news
@techguy – EMR stuff, but a little bit of everything else that interests me too
EMR and HIPAA on Facebook – Like the EMR and HIPAA fan page and get the latest EMR news on Facebook. Plus, you’ll make me feel good when I see the number of fans go up.
