Labor Day in Healthcare

A big shout out to all those who labor hard and do amazing things in healthcare. Particularly those who are stuck working on Labor Day to make sure patients get the care they need. Happy Labor Day!

I must admit that I know very little of the history of Labor Day. Unlike Memorial Day or Fourth of July, I’ve never really celebrated anything special on Labor Day. It was just a day off school. Although, I found this page outlining Labor Day and it has a much richer history than I think most of us appreciate. I’m not sure that’s really going to change. Plus, it use to kind of mark the start of Football season, but that’s no longer the case since we had a full weekend of football already.

I think most of these holidays are somewhat sore points in many healthcare organizations since many healthcare workers are still at work. You can’t really shut down a hospital for the holiday. I’ve heard of all the competition there is to get holidays off. So, on these holidays I always take a moment to think about all the dedicated healthcare professionals that are still working to provide amazing care for patients.

On this Labor Day I’m thinking of the value of work. It’s something I’m trying to instill in my kids. It’s something I love. My wife was talking to some of our friends about me and the work I do and one of them said, “John will never stop working. If he finishes one project, he’ll be starting up the next project.” I think they’re right. I love working on stuff and I can’t imagine I’ll ever stop. The only thing that might change is what I’ll work on.

Over the past 10 years blogging, I’ve realized that I love creating things. I’m still amazed that a nobody in Las Vegas (that’s me) could build a blog network like I’ve done with Healthcare Scene that reaches so many people. Some people would look at the 8000+ blog posts that have been done on the network and think that’s a lot of work. I guess it kind of is, but I don’t look at it that way. Looking back the numbers surprise me too since it certainly hasn’t felt like that much work. I realize I’ve been given the gift of finding joy in monotonous and mundane things. Not to mention a bullheaded determination to finish something I’ve started.

I’m kind of rambling, but that’s what I love about posts on Holidays. Long story short, I never see myself stopping as a blogger. It’s too much fun to make a difference in people’s lives. Plus, it’s now just a part of who I am. Hopefully you’ll keep reading and supporting what we do for as long as we do it. Plus, I’m really excited to see where we take all the things we’ve started doing with Periscope, Blabs, YouTube/G+ Hangouts and podcasts.

Happy Labor Day!

I thought I’d do a search for a few Labor Day comics to celebrate this holiday. I hope you’ll enjoy them as well.

Of course, my kids already started school last week. This cartoon also reminds me of something I read on Facebook, “Summertime, when parents realize that teachers are underpaid.”

It’s been cloudy in Vegas today. So I guess I’ll be working the next 6 weeks. In fact, I’m glad I get to work. I love what I do. Plus, I’m really excited to start my series of EHR video interviews.

I decided to look at the official source of all information, Wikipedia, to see what it said about Labor Day. It was basically as I expected, it was a great American excuse for a Holiday. Ok, I guess it said something about celebrating the worker. As someone who personally loves work, I find it a bit ironic that on Labor Day we’d have all the workers stop working.

Irony aside, I did like the mention of Labor day as a time to honor the US military who is out there working as we speak. I’m always thankful for the work they do to keep America the place that it is.

I did like Eric Cantor’s tweet which said, “Today, we celebrate those who have taken a risk, worked hard, built a business and earned their own success.” I celebrate those people as well. Entrepreneurship is risky business and takes a certain person to even attempt it. Those people are well worth honoring on this labor day.

As I’ve done many times before, on this holiday my thoughts are with all those healthcare workers who are still working 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. It is an often thankless job, but something that changes so many lives for good.

To all of those reading this who love to labor for a good cause, I salute you.

For those of you that were expecting a meaningful use monday post, I’m sorry. Don’t worry though, Lynn will be back with another Meaningful Use Monday post next week. It is Labor Day after all. Although, I saw a great tweet or Facebook status that said, “Why in America do we take the day off on Labor day?” I love plays on words. They also asked why we put a tree in our house for Christmas and not Arbor day.

I must admit that Labor day has become pretty inconsequential for me. Football has already started. My son’s been in school for a week already. Blogging for myself, it’s not like I really get a day off. Plus, we don’t live close to family, so there aren’t even any big family parties.

With that said, I am glad to have the summer behind us. Maybe that’s a function of living in Las Vegas. I’m beginning to understand why retired people come to Vegas in winter and head to cooler areas for summer. Maybe one day I’ll achieve that dream. Although, I also must admit that there’s something comforting about getting back into the routine of school and other activities. Maybe this is a function of younger kids being home all summer.

I must admit that this Labor Day my thoughts have been with many of those who are without jobs. It’s a crazy economic and political environment that we’re in now. I’m afraid we’re looking at a slow recovery and so we’re going to be in the current situation for a while to come.

My one consolation is that there are now 10 writers on the HealthcareScene.com blog network. That’s pretty good considering a year and a half ago when I quit my day job it was just me. I hope I can continue to grow the network and provide even more people income writing about EMR and Health IT. I’m lucky to be associated with such amazing writers. If you don’t know what I mean, go check out some of the other HealthcareScene.com blogs.

Now, time for a little family time. I hear making a fort with my kids is on the agenda today. I love being a kid again.

Happy Labor Day to all those readers in the US, and there’s no reason my international readers can’t enjoy a nice celebration today too. It’s been interesting leading up to this holiday for me now that I’m a full time blogger and internet entrepreneur. My wife asked me if I got today off. I told her I’d have to talk to my boss and get back to her.

The other interesting part of this dilemma is that I love what I do for work. Aren’t you suppose to do the things that you love on a Holiday? Makes for an interesting decision with certainly no right answer.

Either way, it’s been a great weekend for me already. My college football team won on Saturday and so we’re looking forward to a great football season. Regardless of how much I “work” today, I’m sure I’ll be embarking on some great adventure with my wife and 3 kids.

I dug into some old videos last night and ended up watching Dead Poets Society. I thought it fitting to hear the message Carpe Diem, “Seize the Day.” I think that’s an appropriate message for me to think about as we decide what to do today. Add that to my life philosophy that “Life is about making stories and telling stories” and hopefully I can find something that will meet those two objectives.

I’d love to hear what you plan to do. Either way, enjoy your Holiday! Plus, a big thanks to all those healthcare providers who are still working today. Your sacrifice and commitment to your jobs isn’t lost on me.
