HIMSS 12 New Media Meetup – Sponsored by simplifyMD

Written by:

REGISTER NOW!!

I’m really excited to announce the 3rd annual New Media Meetup at HIMSS 2012. Last year’s event had an amazing turnout in Orlando and I expect this year’s will be even better with a whole bunch of interesting new and old faces. It’s quite frankly my favorite part of HIMSS thanks to the amazing people who are there.

Everyone is welcome at the event. Maybe you participate in New Media (Blogger, Tweeter, LinkedIn, Facebook, etc) or maybe you just enjoy consuming other people’s media (like this blog) or maybe you’re interested in using New Media for yourself or your company. Everyone is welcome to attend and network with others interested in New Media. I’m excited this year to welcome the #HITsm and #hcsm crowd that will be out in full force I’m sure.

If that isn’t enough reason to attend, I’m really happy to have teamed up with simplifyMD to sponsor the New Media Meetup at HIMSS Las Vegas. The event will be on Wednesday 2/22 7:00-9:00 PM at the awesome BB King’s Blues Club in the Mirage Hotel (A short walk across the street from the Venetian/Sands). That’s right: an open bar, Live Music with a dance floor, and amazing people.

UPDATE: Ozmosis has come on board again this year to sponsor the giveaways at the Meetup. They’ve provided 3 Kindle Fire that we’ll give away to 3 lucky people who attend. Read more about Ozmosis and see pictures of the awesome BB King venue for the event on EMR and EHR.

REGISTER NOW!!

Please register for the event so we know how many to expect. I expect we’ll max out registrations for the event like we did last year, so register now before it’s too late.

Be sure to tell all your Blogger, Twitter and other new media friends about the event so we have the best and brightest in the healthcare IT social media world at the event.

EHR Charting in Another Language

Written by:

I recently started to think about some of the implications associated with multiple languages in an EHR. One of my readers asked me how EHR vendors correlated data from those charting in Spanish and those charting in English. My first response to this question was, “How many doctors chart in Spanish?” Yes, this was a very US centric response since obviously I know that almost all of the doctors in Latin America and other Spanish speaking countries chart in Spanish, but I wonder how many doctors in the US chart in Spanish. I expect the answer is A LOT more than I realize.

Partial evidence of this is that about a year ago HIMSS announced a Latino Health IT Initiative. From that today there is now a HIMSS Latino Community web page and also a HIMSS Latino Community Workshop at the HIMSS Annual Conference in Las Vegas. I’m going to have to find some time to try and learn more about the HIMSS Latino Community. My Espanol is terrible, but I know enough that I think I could enjoy the event.

After my initial reaction, I then started wondering how you would correlate data from another language. So, much for coordinated care. I wonder what a doctor does if he asks for his patient’s record and it is all in Spanish. That’s great if all of your doctors know Spanish, but in the US at least I don’t know of any community that has doctors who know Spanish in every specialty. How do they get around it? I don’t think those translation services you can call are much help.

Once we start talking about automated patient records the language issue becomes more of a problem. Although, maybe part of that problem is solved if you use could standards like ICD-10, SNOMED, etc. A code is a code is a code regardless of what language it is and computers are great at matching up those codes. Although, if these standards are not used, then forget trying to connect the data even through Natural Language Processing (NLP). Sure the NLP could be bi-lingual, but has anyone done that? My guess is not.

All of this might start to really matter more when we’re talking about public health issues as we aggregate data internationally. Language becomes a much larger issue in this context and so it begs for an established set of standards for easy comparison.

I’d be interested to hear about other stories and experiences with EHR charting in Spanish or another language. I bet the open source EHR have some interesting solutions similar to the open source projects I know well. I look forward to learning more about the challenge of multiple languages.

New Media Meetup at #HIMSS11 Pictures and Video

Written by:

Just back from an exhausting but fruitful #HIMSS11. A highlight was the new media meetup at the MEDecision booth – great to meet you all
@MattA_PCMH
Matt Adamson

I couldn’t agree more with @MattA_PCMH. I’m obviously biased since I organized the event, but the good part is that it far exceeded my expectations. You never know what’s going to happen when the people attending the event essentially came from two blog posts and a bunch of tweets and retweets. As I mentioned at the meetup, It’s also an amazing illustration of the power of social media.

I was highly impressed with the quality of the people that attended. Besides the fact that it’s fun to meet people IRL (in real life) that you feel like you know because you follow them on Twitter and/or their blog, it’s also neat to meet people from across the spectrum of healthcare IT that’s represented at HIMSS. Despite the various differences and backgrounds, we all had one collective bond: interest in New Media (Blogs, Twitter, Facebook, etc). I think that’s what makes this meetup unique, interesting and a lot of fun!

A really big thanks to our main sponsor MEDecision for the food, drinks, venue and Flip video camera giveaways. Thanks also to Ozmosis for sponsoring the iPad giveaway. I think MEDecision must have seen my flip video camera envy, because at the end of the event they were incredibly kind and hooked me up with my own flip video camera. Very classy organization and I can’t wait to see what we can put together for the 3rd Annual New Media Meetup at HIMSS12 in Las Vegas. I told MEDecision we were going to have to go Big since I call Las Vegas home. I’m sure they’ll deliver like they have the past two meetups.

Someone on Twitter also brought up the idea of a Young Professionals meetup at HIMSS. I think I might have to explore this idea a bit more for next year since it would be an interesting compliment to the New Media Meetup. I’ll just have to set the age high enough that I’m considered a young professional.

Now for a few pictures from the New Media Meetup at HIMSS 2011 (click on the pictures twice to see the full picture):

And this video at the tail end of the meetup after most of the people had cleared out, but some familiar faces were still hanging around:

Social Media Sessions at HIMSS and Other HIMSS Talk

Written by:

As many of you probably know, I’m a big fan of social media. Certainly it’s been a great way for me to market the content I create on my websites, but it is much more than that for me. Social media (like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc) are a great way for me to connect and interact with other people. I’ve heard so many people tell me they don’t understand Twitter. I like to explain that Twitter is about being able to connect with people related to almost any topic imaginable. It gives you a way to follow them and to communicate with them in a passive and interesting way. It’s incredibly powerful.

Plus, Twitter and other social media is fun. You get the chance to learn a lot from those around you. Not to mention those connections can do some powerful things. I’ve gotten everything from free conference attendance to free graphic design to finding my accountant on Twitter. It’s a beautiful thing if you use it right.

The problem most people have is that they don’t know how to use it and their afraid to get started. Well, I will tell you it does take some commitment of time to make it effective. However, it’s been well worth it for me.

Back on topic, the HIMSS 11 conference in Orlando is going to be a great event to see some of the power of Twitter. You can do it by following what people are saying about HIMSS (and the hashtag #himss11) or check out some of the various HIMSS Twitter lists. You don’t even have to be on Twitter to consume the content. It’s pretty interesting to follow even now.

HIMSS also has created a social media pavillion on the exhibit floor where they’ll be having a bunch of social media center sessions. Here’s a sample of some of the session titles, “Twitter Created the New Radio Star” (so true), “Physicians and Meaningful Use: What We Are Seeing in Social Media” and “Blogging as a Career: Strategies for Clinicians and Health IT Bloggers” (by Dr. Kim) and lots more. Cesar from HIMSS always puts together a lot of interesting social media content at HIMSS.

Of course, I put together the New Media Meetup at HIMSS to also bring together some of the smartest and most interesting people using New Media in healthcare. The event has nearly reached capacity and I’m also happy to say that we’ve added a new sponsor, Ozmosis, who will be giving away an iPad at the event. Pretty sweet if I do say so myself.

If you can’t tell, I have HIMSS on the brain right now. Maybe it’s because I’m inundated by all the PR people asking to meet with me at HIMSS. The good thing is that my schedule is nearly full and so it’s easier for me to say sorry when the schedule is full. Although, there’s always more room to add to my list of possible parties to attend. So, if you know of any I should attend, let me know.

I was also amazed by the list of government officials that will be attending HIMSS. That’s pretty much all of the high level health leadership that exists in the US government. The only person that they could add to top what’s on that list is Obama and/or Biden.

I won’t go over all the other HIMSS sessions that look interesting, including some interesting HIMSS 11 keynote speakers. All in all I think it will be a great event where I’m running all over the place. However, I plan to run quickly between places, but to have slow, valuable conversations with those with whom I do meet. I’d rather have 10 valuable conversations with smart people than 100 shallow conversations with random people.

If you’re attending HIMSS, what gets you excited?

P.S. Here are the links to some of my various social media profiles:
@ehrandhit – Twitter feed of EMR and healthcare IT news
@techguy – EMR stuff, but a little bit of everything else that interests me too
EMR and HIPAA on Facebook – Like the EMR and HIPAA fan page and get the latest EMR news on Facebook. Plus, you’ll make me feel good when I see the number of fans go up.

HIMSS 11 New Media Meetup – Sponsored by MEDecision

Written by:

REGISTER NOW!!

I’m really excited to announce the second annual New Media Meetup at HIMSS 2011. Last year’s event was pretty amazing in Atlanta and I expect this year’s will be just as good and with a whole bunch of interesting new and old faces. It’s one of the most interesting networking events that I did at HIMSS.

If that isn’t enough reason to attend, I’m really happy to have teamed up with MEDecision again this year to sponsor the New Media Meetup at HIMSS Orlando. They’ll be fully catering the event (Translation: Free FOOD) which if it’s anything like last year, you won’t be disappointed at ALL! Not to mention, they’ll be providing an enclosed area in their swanky booth on the main aisle of the exhibition floor for the event.

Ok, now to the gory details. The event will be on Tuesday 2/22 4:30-6:00 PM in Booth 2563 (MEDecision booth). It’s right at the end of the day on Tuesday before you head out to all the other night parties. Grab a bite to eat and meet some really great people.

UPDATE: Thanks to the good people at Ozmosis, we’ll be giving away an iPad at the event. Plus, along with providing all the food and drink, MEDecision has offered up a bunch of FLIP video cameras to giveaway.

REGISTER NOW!!

Please register for the event so we know how many to expect. At some point we may have to close registrations since their booth can only hold so many, so register now and come join the fun.

Be sure to tell all your Blogger, Twitter and other new media friends about the event. The more people you invite, the better the event will become. I look forward to meeting you all!

Poll: Are you planning to attend HIMSS 2011?

Written by:

I’ve got my registration for HIMSS 2011 all squared away and now I’m looking for the right hotel. If you have any secrets for Orlando, let me know. Plus, if any companies want to sponsor my coverage of HIMSS, drop me a note on my Contact Us page.

I know it’s early, but it looks like I’ll be holding another New Media – Blogger Meetup at HIMSS Orlando. So, watch for more details on that. It was a GREAT event last year at the Georgia Acquarium (Sponsored by MEDecision). Great people. Great food (with full dinnerware, tables and chairs unlike the small plastic plates the rest of the attendees had while they stood). A bunch of prizes (so many people wanted to see Colbie Caillat). Anyway, more details later and let me know if you’d like to help organize it.

Now to the poll to see how many readers of EMR and HIPAA will be at HIMSS 2011.

I hope I get to meet many of my readers there.

My Major HIMSS 10 Event Plans

Written by:

I’ll admit that I’m having an interesting challenge figuring out how to manage all of the various things I can do at HIMSS. I’m sure that many others have the same problem. Not to mention managing the mix of all the content that’s coming out and planning my own visit to HIMSS. A great problem to have I think.

For those who are interested in meeting me, here’s a couple places where you will be sure to find me at HIMSS 10:
HIMSS Meet the Blogger Panel – I’ll be on the panel on Monday, March 1st from 3-4:30. This is an incredible panel of people that I highly respect. This should be a really lively discussion.

New Media Meetups at HIMSS 10 – These events are shaping up to be really incredible events. Looking through the list of people who have RSVP’d for the kick off event, it’s going to be a really interesting mix of people. Not to mention Colbie Caillat singing, free food and some great free giveaways. Make sure you Register for the Kick Off Event on Monday, March 1st at the MEDecision party. Thanks to MxSecure and Pervasive for also sponsoring the other meetups.

I’d love to meetup with other people or if you’re an EMR vendor that’s doing something innovative let me know in the comments or drop me a note on my Contact Us page.

There are so many events I’m interested in attending. However, no doubt I’ll have some fun at the CCHIT Town Hall Meeting and I’ll be hoping that the David Blumenthal’s HIMSS Keynote is meaningful.

Are there any must see sessions or events? Let me know of any events you think I should attend and cover on this blog.

Also, if you’re interested in following my HIMSS 10 coverage, you can sign up for my EMR and HIPAA email list, check out my posts on EMR and EHR, and follow my tweets on my @ehrandhit and @techguy twitter accounts. It will basically be like you’re there with me.

Blogger-Twitter Meetup at HIMSS Annual Conference

Written by:

I’m getting very excited about the HIMSS Annual Conference. As someone who writes as much as I do about healthcare IT, I think that going to the HIMSS conference is going to be like a little kid in a candy store. I could be wrong, but I think it’s going to be a lot of fun for me. Extremely busy, but I’ll enjoy every minute of it.

As I’ve started to put together my plans for the conference, I was thinking that it might be interesting to have a blogger meetup at the conference. Maybe it should just be called a New Media conference so people on Twitter could come as well as bloggers. Plus, I’m cool with readers of various blogs coming to participate as well. I know there have been blogger meetups at HIMSS in the past. I think that Shahid has helped out with those in the past. Maybe he already has something planned.

The other good news is that it looks like I might have a sponsor for a blogger meetup. So, if we get enough interest I think we could get the meetup sponsored and have an even better time. That means, let me know of your interest in the comments and we’ll see what we can put together.

Also, I’ve signed up my first sponsor for my coverage of the HIMSS conference. I’m still looking for a couple more. If people are interested, feel free to drop me a note on my contact us page.

EMR and HIPAA 2010

Written by:

As I mentioned in my post discussing the last year on EMR and HIPAA, I thought it worth talking about some of our plans for the coming year. 2010 is going to be an absolute banner year for EMR. We’re going to see the beginning of major shifts in the EMR world. Everything from merging EMR companies to clinics fretting over the EMR stimulus money. It’s going to be a very exciting and interesting time for those interested in EMR.

EMR and HIPAA Blogging – We’ll continue blogging, although maybe not as much as we did last year. However, it’s just part of my routine so I’ll be surprised if too much changes in that regard. I’ve NEVER had an issue with things to blog about. In 2010 I think sifting through all the content and news will be the real challenge. At the end of the day, my goal with blogging is to provide value to readers. Hopefully I can achieve that goal in 2010.

EMR and EHR Blog – Many of you know that I’ve been doing quite a bit of blogging on EMR and EHR. I expect the blogging on that site will increase in 2010. There won’t be too much difference between EMR and HIPAA and EMR and EHR, but EMR and EHR will generally focus on more news items. Also, I’m considering launching another EMR site that just does EMR news. We’ll see how that evolves.

EMR – EHR Conference – I’m working together with a partner to hold an EMR and EHR conference. I’ll be helping to put together the agenda for the conference which will likely be held around September 2010. The focus of the conference will be on providing practical information on selecting and implementing an EMR.

EMR Selection Book – I’ve made really good progress on my EMR selection e-Book. I expect to launch it to the world in early 2010. Then, I’ll start working on an EMR implementation e-Book along with other related e-Books. Hopefully I can add some value to those searching for the right EMR. Not to mention improve EMR implementation success rates. In some respects, I think these books as a cliff notes version of this blog. Other people have called it an “EMR for Dummies” type book.

Attending HIMSS 10 – I’ll be attending the HIMSS annual conference for the first time. If you can’t attend, then we’ll be covering it for you. I’m still deciding the best way to cover the conference. If you have suggestions or ideas, feel free to leave them in the comments. I was told we’ll have a Meet the Bloggers session at the conference also. I’m excited to meet readers of the site and also to talk with potential advertisers. I’m also interested in talking with someone who wants to sponsor all the posts I do at HIMSS. If you’re interested in more details, drop me a note.

I’m sure there’s a lot more, but that’s some of the major things. I’m also working on a side project which deals with online fundraising for organizations. I’d be interested in talking with non-profit hospitals to learn more about what they’re doing to fundraise. If you have a few moments to talk, let me know on my contact us page.

P.S. If you’re looking for my thoughts on the ONC “meaningful use” final rule, it will come in the next couple days. I like to give myself a few days to synthesize the information. It’s 76 pages (or something like that) for goodness sake.
