2300 Blog Posts and 11 Million Pageviews Later

For those that don’t know the history of EMR and HIPAA, I wrote the first post on EMR and HIPAA back on December 11, 2005. It’s fun to read that first post. Short and sweet. I hit some high level points which amazingly still represent my desires 10 years later. “I will try to incorporate any aspects of EMR and HIPAA because I think best practices across the industry are important to know.” – I still try to incorporate any aspect of healthcare IT. Lately I’ve been writing even more about the business of medicine, but I still try and find best practices.

In my original post I invited people to participate in the conversation. I still desire this greatly, but I’ve found that much of the conversation has moved to social media versus the blog comment section. Plus, as I’ve refined my blogging skill, it avoids many comment threads. In the beginning I wasn’t as skilled and so there was a lot of opportunity to correct me which made for great comment threads.

The last line of that original post really expressed my understanding of EHR at the time: “This is my best knowledge from my research and is not guaranteed in anyway.” Pretty funny that I thought to put in a disclaimer from the start. When I started I knew so little. It’s amazing how much you can learn over 10 years. Yet, I’m still learning.

5 months into my EMR and HIPAA blogging journey I celebrated reaching 30,000 visitors to my blog. I was amazed by my achievement. Little did I know that less than 10 years later I’d be celebrating 2300 blog posts and 11 million pageviews. For some perspective, we celebrated 3 million pageviews in August 2010 and then last Valentine’s day we celebrated 9 million pageviews. I was nostalgic for those posts and still am today.

I’m really not sure how to process 2300 blog posts and 11 million pageviews for one of my Healthcare Scene blogs. I mostly feel to say: Thank you!

I never thought I’d be a full time blogger when I grew up, but I feel lucky to do so. Over the past 5 years as a full time blogger, it’s been amazing to see the blogging business model change. When I started blogging people were happy to buy links from my site (We stay far away from that now). We always have done some pay per click and display advertising and those both still do quite well for us. However, as we’ve matured, we’ve been able to offer a variety of email marketing and sponsored content options which really take healthcare IT marketing to the next level.

With that in mind, I want to take a second to thank those companies who are currently supporting the work we do here at EMR and HIPAA. Without their support, none of this would be possible.

Healthcare IT marketing and PR have been on my mind lately as I’ve been preparing for the Healthcare IT Marketing and PR Conference (HITMC) and for HIMSS. We’ve published the full HITMC program if you haven’t seen it yet. It’s going to be a really amazing 2 days of learning for me and everyone who attends. Hopefully many EMR and HIPAA readers can make it. There’s only 5 days left to register for the event, so do so now if you’d like to attend.

We’ve certainly seen the evolution of marketing here on EMR and HIPAA. At first people mostly wanted to buy a link to their site from us since we were on the first page of Google for the term “EMR”. (Side note: Don’t buy links. That’s a bad strategy today.) Then, we started doing banner ads and those have always performed really well for our advertisers since we have such a targeted, niche audience. Recently we’ve been expanding our email marketing, event marketing and sponsored content packages. They’ve really become fully integrated marketing packages that touch on email, social media, blogs, and display advertising. It’s exciting what we’re able to deliver sponsors of our site.

10 years later it’s amazing to think back on the 2239 posts we’ve published, the 9743 comments that readers have contributed and the 10,689,418 pageviews for EMR and HIPAA. I wonder how many emails we’ve sent out with our content over the years, but I don’t have a good way to track it. Just last year I estimate that this blog has sent out 1.25 million emails. Wow! Thanks to all of you who read and contribute.

Every 6 months or so I like to highlight the companies who support the work we do here at EMR and HIPAA. Without them, I wouldn’t be able to be a full time blogger and provide you the content I do. Take a second to look through the list and see if one of them might be able to help you solve a problem you’re working on in your job.

Vocera – Vocera is an interesting story for me, since they acquired a secure messaging company I advised (docBeat). Since that acquisition, I’ve been lucky to advise them on some marketing and they’ve also been sponsoring a number of Healthcare Scene email campaigns. They offer a pretty compelling set of secure, real-time communication solutions for healthcare. Plus, they have a good announcement coming out at HIMSS that I think will set them apart from the other secure messaging solutions out there. Although, I’m not allowed to talk about the announcement yet. You can see Vocera’s HIMSS 2015 plans if you want to meet with them in person and learn about the announcement.

Iron Mountain – It was fun working with Iron Mountain on their Healthcare Information Governance Predictions and Perspectives series. You can find all the entries in that series here and my entry here. Plus, I was able to participate in their #InfoTalk Twitter chat which was really well done as well. I hope they continue the discussion, because it’s an important one.

ClinicSpectrum – Regular readers should be familiar with ClinicSpectrum. They’ve been contributing some great content in our Cost Effective Healthcare Workflow Series. I love how they’re interested in taking the discussion beyond just EHR and meaningful use into how a practice or hospital can optimize their use of technology. Plus, they’re really passionate about the hybrid workflow which mixes technology and people to find the optimal solution. We need more of this optimization in healthcare.

The Breakaway Group (A Xerox Company) – You’ll also likely be familiar with The Breakaway Group and their Breakaway Thinking Series. I’ve always loved the researched based perspective that they provide to the challenges that face healthcare IT. Plus, they offer some unique perspectives on training and learning in healthcare. One of the biggest challenges with any healthcare IT implementation is getting the training right. The Breakaway Group is dead set on solving that problem.

Ambir – Ambir’s been supporting the work we do here since January of 2010. Amazing that they’ve been with us for 5 years. I think that was before I even quit my day job. Most people know them as a scanner company, but word on the street is that at HIMSS 2015 they’ll be announcing a new tablet based product. I’ve heard the concept and I think it’s a really creative approach to solving healthcare’s workflow challenges.

HIPAA Secure Now! – We’re seeing a big wave of healthcare organizations and business associates finally starting to do something about HIPAA. Much of this has been pushed by meaningful use’s risk assessment requirement, but it’s also been driven by all the breaches. HIPAA Secure Now! is offering our readers Free HIPAA Security Training.

Health IT & EMR Advertising

Digital Health Conference – I wrote previously about how much I like the Digital Health Conference in New York City. So, you can imagine I’m happy to have their event advertised on EMR and HIPAA. GE Healthcare – If any of you watched the Olympics, you have certainly seen that GE is doing a lot of work in healthcare. It is kind of cool to think that GE healthcare is advertising in the Olympics and on EMR and HIPAA. Obviously, quite a bit different goals and EMR & HIPAA might be a little more targeted to healthcare IT professionals than the Olympics.

Physia – For those of you who haven’t yet seen me talk about Physia on Twitter, this is a new venture I’m doing with Shahid Shah. Physia does really low cost physician websites. However, that’s just the beginning of what we have in mind. We plan to layer a whole set of services on top of those websites that turn your website from a glorified yellow page ad into an integral part of your office. Ambir ADF Scanners for Healthcare – Healthcare Gadget Friday

Many love to discuss the idea of the paperless office in healthcare. This turns out to be a dream that is (at least for now) impossible to obtain. In fact, some people argue that the amount of paper you use in an office increases because an EHR can print out a whole patient record so quickly. However, the bigger issue with paper post-EHR implementation usually has to do with all of the paper that your patients bring into the office and the paper documents that your patients need to sign. One day these issues might be resolved through HIEs and digital signatures. Until then, the most important tool a physician can have in their practice is a great scanner.

I’ve told the story multiple times about my very first EHR implementation where we used one of those cheap multi function scanners in medical records because we already had it. Fast forward a month or so and we’d literally burned through that scanner. That’s when I learned my first lesson that not all scanners are created equal.

I’ve had the powerful, but expensive Fujitsu scanners listed on my EMR Technology page for a long time. I know a lot of doctors offices that use these and they are just work horses that with some simple regular maintenance last forever. My biggest problem with these scanners has been their price. I remember how hard it was for me to convince a practice that it was worth the hefty price tag.

Ambir ImageScan Pro 820i and Ambir ImageScan Pro 930u

The good news is that healthcare now has another option in the Ambir ADF scanners. Ambir’s been in the scanner business for quite a while, but these ADF scanners are a relatively new addition to their scanner line up. I’ve had the chance to use both their Ambir ImageScan Pro 820i (See Amazon Listing) and their new Ambir ImageScan Pro 930u and can say I was quite pleased with both scanners.

I won’t bore you with all the specific specs for each scanner since you can read those on the website. I’ll just cover some of the highlights. The obvious difference between the 820i and the 930u is the speed. They do 25 ppm and 40 ppm (black and white) respectively. Seeing those numbers shows a stark contrast, but to be honest I never felt like the 820i was slow and I expect it would be fast enough for most ambulatory offices.

The 930u also has the fabulously named “Ultrasonic misfeed detection.” Isn’t that a great name? Per the websites it, “Stops jams and double-feeds before the happen.” Although, in the time I’ve been using both scanners I’ve never had problems with either scanner having a problem.

I personally love the robust scanning software that comes with both scanners. In fact, if anything there might be too many options to choose from in how you want to configure your scanner. I’m sure they could improve this with a little better interface that does a better job hiding some of the more advanced options and bringing out those options that people really care to configure most often. Although, as a techguy I loved having all the options at my disposal. The only trouble is that many practices don’t have a tech person who will wade through the options to find the best configuration. Thus my suggestion to make it feel simpler. The good part is that most people will configure it once and then not worry about it again.

The on-scanner buttons are simple and basically lean on the software in the background to do the heavy lifting. One button that I wish they had was a way to quickly switch between Front Side, Back Side and Duplex scanning. It’s pretty annoying to have to go into the software to change this setting. A button on the scanner to toggle through those settings would be ideal.

I’m not sure why, but the 820i also feels like a better designed, more sturdy product than the 930u. The 820i has the smoother edges which also adds to its visual appeal, but there’s something about it that makes it feel like a much more solid scanner than the 930u. I’m not sure if the 930u just uses cheaper plastic or something, but it doesn’t have the same well designed feel of the 820i. I wouldn’t say the 930u has a poor design, but when comparing the two side by side you can see the difference. I also love the flip up tray (820i) better than the slide in tray (930u), but that might be personal preference.

They’re both quite compact designs for an ADF scanner. I’m not sure you could really get a smaller footprint than what they’ve done with both of these scanners. Another great feature is that the scanners support ID scanning as well. Considering the number of licenses and insurance cards that we scan in healthcare, this is great.

Most EHR vendors will be glad to hear that it supports the popular TWAIN driver which I think most EHR vendors use to interface with scanners. The TWAIN driver automatically rotates pages, adjusts brightness, and autocrops images to minimize file size and increase OCR accuracy. Other features include: auto page sizing, blank page removal and auto deskew.

All in all I was quite pleased with the Ambir ADF scanners. I couldn’t find any major problems with them in all my tests and use of the scanner. I’ll be adding them as an EMR and HIPAA approved product on my EMR Technology page.

Great Period for EMR and HIPAA

I use to do this a lot more when I started blogging, but I’m so busy with all the Healthcare Scene blogs that I don’t do it nearly as much. Although, I think it’s interesting to take a quick look at some of the stats for EMR and HIPAA and also take a minute to recognize the new and renewing advertisers on the site. I hope you’ll indulge me for a minute and you’ll take a look at those companies that support the work I do here on EMR and HIPAA. Most of them are not only sponsors of the site, but also readers. That means a lot to me.

First, let’s take a look at some stats for EMR and HIPAA. This will be the 1,318th post and there have been 6417 comments on those posts. That’s about 5 comments a post which is pretty incredible. According to WP.com stats, we’ve had 5,920,478 pageviews since I started using that stats program in July 2007. Since my first blog post was back in December 2005, that puts us well over 6 million pageviews.

This is astounding to me. I remember when I thought that maybe 1000 pageviews a day was the entire EHR market online. I’m glad I was wrong. Thanks for everyone that’s been reading. In fact, in another milestone, the EMR and HIPAA email subscription just blew by 4000 subscribers (now at 4,079). Considering I mistakenly didn’t start this email list until 2009, I’m happy that 4000 people want a daily email from EMR and HIPAA. Add in the 15,538 twitter followers on @ehrandhit and I’m humbled beyond belief.

Speaking of humbling experiences, this list of new and renewing EMR and HIPAA sponsors is really humbling as well. I’m very appreciative of their support.

New EMR and HIPAA Advertisers
Greenway – I’d been talking with Greenway for about a year about advertising on my network of websites. They might have been a little busy with something called an IPO (GWAY) that slowed the discussion. Now that the IPO is out of the way, we were able to finally finish up the details of Greenway advertising. For those who don’t know Greenway, they provide an integrated EHR and clinical research solution to more than 40,0000 providers in 30 specialties. Greenway has a single-database EHR, PM and interoperability solution called PrimeSUITE®. As one Greenway partner said to me at HIMSS, “Greenway is a good company with good people trying to do good for healthcare.” I can’t say I’ve seen anything to say otherwise.

NoMoreClipboard – The President of NoMoreClipboard, Jeff Donnell, was my first ever meeting at HIMSS. NoMoreClipboard has been doing some really interesting things since then including it’s most recent partnership with iMPak (see my interview with NoMoreClipboard and iMPak). I’d label iMPak as the most creative technology that I found at HIMSS 2012. Once I get a good demo video of the product, I’ll be doing a full post about it. It makes a lot of sense for the iMPak technology to be put together with the NoMoreClipboard technology. I’m looking forward to see what else they do together as well.

Online Tech – I think this is the first time I’ve had a web hosting company advertise on my site. After talking with Online Tech, I think I know why they want to advertise on EMR and HIPAA. Most hosting companies pay lip service to HIPAA, but Online Tech takes it very seriously. While I haven’t done a really deep dive into all the details of their hosting and HIPAA compliance, I could quickly tell how much HIPAA privacy and security was part of their culture. I believe HIPAA compliance is less about perfection and more about intent and effort. I think those who work with Online Tech won’t have to worry as much about being a “Covered Entity with Egg on Their Face.”
