Written by:

M*Modal announced the latest/greatest in a cohesive line of clinical speech solutions – Fluency Direct.  Fluency Direct voice-enables EHRs and other clinical systems from anywhere, allowing physicians the flexibility of dictating their notes on-the-go while still providing top functionality needed to tell a more complete patient narrative in real-time.

Platform includes new M*Modal Fluency DirectTM to speech-enable EHRs and orchestrate healthcare workflows

FRANKLIN, Tenn.–(May 9, 2012)M*Modal (MModal Inc. – NASDAQ/GS: MODL), a leading provider of clinical documentation services and Speech Understanding™ solutions, today announced the launch of M*Modal Fluency™, a new family of clinical solutions built on the Company’s cloud-based healthcare Speech Understanding platform. The Company also today introduced M*Modal Fluency Direct™, which speech-enables EHRs and other clinical systems on any workstation, anywhere in the enterprise to assist care providers from every medical specialty in the creation of high-quality clinical documentation. Providers can conversationally update patient narratives while M*Modal Fluency Direct interprets and understands their statements and populates EHR templates in a real-time, single process.

“At M*Modal, we’ve taken a unique approach to capturing the complete patient story through the power of advanced Speech Understanding,” said Vern Davenport, Chairman and CEO, M*Modal. “We see the doctor’s narrative as a rich source of unstructured clinical data that can now be easily created, explored and analyzed to enhance the quality of care in the most efficient and meaningful ways, while improving internal processes, such as reimbursement.”

Benefiting from a decade of continuous advancements, this latest market introduction furthers M*Modal’s rich heritage of delivering speech technologies, contextual understanding and workflow orchestration technologies to the healthcare industry. The new line of M*Modal Fluency clinical solutions has been built on M*Modal’s proprietary cloud-based Speech Understanding platform. The M*Modal Fluency family of solutions was designed to orchestrate information-enabled dynamic workflows that improve the quality, completeness and compliance of clinical documentation. M*Modal Fluency Direct provides:

  • Speech Understanding Capability: This capability surpasses traditional speech recognition technology, by analyzing the spoken word, understanding the intent and generating actionable data that informs and drives workflow – all with unmatched accuracy in a real-time, single process.
  • Fully Integrated Enterprise-Class Technology: Whether relying on mobile reporting, direct EHR speech enablement or simply back-end transcription, providers enjoy a consistent, personalized experience from any location. All M*Modal Fluency solutions rely on a single, cohesive technology platform housed in the cloud.
  • Out-of-the-Box Accuracy from Day One: There is no need to train M*Modal Fluency. For the past eight years and 200,000 physician voices later, the system has processed and analyzed huge quantities of data to understand the spoken word and in what context it was spoken. It understands each physician’s accent, dialect, cadence and any sub-specialty terminology right out of the gate.
  • The Power of the Cloud: M*Modal Fluency allows providers to access a reliable and secure platform anytime, anywhere, on any workstation and provides IT departments with a streamlined deployment model that is easy to maintain.
  • Meaningful Use and ICD-10: M*Modal Fluency enables providers to be more efficient at capturing patient information in their clinical systems. This in turn drives adoption of EHRs and facilitates compliance with incentive programs such as Meaningful Use, as well as assisting with the transition to ICD-10.

The M*Modal Fluency family of speech understanding solutions includes:

  • M*Modal Fluency Direct™: Integrates effortlessly with leading EHRs and other clinical systems. Rather than typing, physicians simply speak into their EHR. In a single step, their voice instantly populates their system of choice.
  • M*Modal Fluency for Transcription™: Offers a single document management and workflow solution integrating the capture of voice with speech recognition, editing and electronic signature tools. Includes document distribution and EHR integration capabilities as well as advanced reporting analytics for data-driven decisions in support of workflow and quality improvements.
  • M*Modal Fluency for Imaging™: Redefines reporting by combining three solutions into one comprehensive platform – Speech Understanding technology with real-time prompts, unified worklists and departmental business analytics – to measurably improve productivity, efficiency, quality and patient outcomes.
  • M*Modal Fluency for Coding™: Uniquely combines computer-assisted coding, an embedded encoder and powerful workflow management tools to instantly impact the bottom line and ease the transition to ICD-10.
  • M*Modal Fluency for Practices™: Enables physician practices to be compliant and productive with a cloud-based document management platform, easy dictation, quality transcription and seamless integration with EHRs and other clinical systems.

“M*Modal Fluency is plug-and-play. It’s helpful to be able to just carry the mic as opposed to carrying a big computer with you,” said Daniel Fischman, MD, MMM, Physician Champion for Clinical Informatics, PinnacleHealth. “M*Modal is very precise regarding physician language. It’s geared towards the way physicians think and the way physicians speak. When I want to capture a patient or physician conversation, I’m now able to dictate complex or long conversations in a natural conversational manner.”

“Speech capability in the health care marketplace is exploding. However, to be successful, speech must be accompanied by natural language understanding,” said Dave Garets, General Manager and Executive Director of the Health Care IT research services, The Advisory Board Company. “The solution in demand is a cloud technology platform that a physician can leverage anywhere, anytime, with a unique voice profile that speeds more granular clinical documentation and helps enrich the information in the health care organization’s EMR and business intelligence tools.”

ClearDATA Co-Founder and Chief Privacy Officer Chris Bowen to Speak at 21st Annual WEDI National Conference

Written by:

ClearDATA CPO to Highlight Best Practices of Securing PHI in the Cloud

Phoenix, AZ, April 30, 2012 – – ClearDATA Networks, Inc., the leading healthcare cloud computing platform and service provider, today announced that its co-founder and Chief Privacy Officer Chris Bowen will be a featured speaker on the topic of “PHI and Cloud Computing” at the 21st Annual WEDI National Conference being held May 1-3, 2012 in Tampa, Florida.  Healthcare leaders from across the nation attend the WEDI (Workgroup for Electronic Data Interchange) Conference to learn about and address issues of primary concern to the healthcare industry.

“Securing data and patient information is a top priority in our industry and many are concerned of potential security risks associated with moving PHI to the cloud,” said Chris Bowen, Chief Privacy Officer for ClearDATA Networks, Inc. “While safeguarding PHI in the cloud does introduce new security issues, it can also reduce or eliminate many security threats. Done properly, PHI in the cloud can effectively be more secure, and definitely more cost effective, than storing PHI onsite for a healthcare provider.”

WEDI Conference Session Title: PHI and Cloud Computing

Wednesday, May 2, 2012 from 3:25 PM – 4:55 PM

Grand Hyatt Hotel Tampa Bay, White Ibis Room

Abstract: Cloud Computing has become a popular choice to move/store data while leveraging speed and cost effectiveness. However, covered entities, business associates and all others responsible to keep sensitive date (including PHI) protected and secure have a lot to consider when moving into the cloud environment. Vendors are offering cloud technology; the federal government is mandating its business to move towards the cloud and NIST has been releasing Special Publications regarding cloud computing and security.

Mobile Clinician Practice Improves Efficiency & Security with Online Tech’s HIPAA Compliant Cloud

Written by:

Northeast Behavioral Associates Analyzes the Security, Efficiency, and Costs of Cloud vs In-House Hosting

Ann Arbor, Michigan – March 20, 2012 – Northeast Behavioral Associates needed to overhaul their IT infrastructure. Their mobile health IT workflow needed to support secure clinical documentation for 25 clinicians on the road across multiple states in New England, all making extensive clinical documentation for each of several visits throughout the day.

“We work with children and their families who are struggling with disruptive behaviors. You have to work with them in the context of their home environment, because the behavior changes once you bring them to an office setting,” explained Stephen Patch, CEO of Northeast Behavioral Associates.

The problem was saving clinical documentation securely back to one of five offices scattered across New England. Asking each clinician to return to an office to make notes between visits caused huge inefficiencies and unnecessary costs. Likewise, the risk of loss or theft of patient records by leaving paper or digital records in the car between visits was unacceptably high. Although they were taking certain security precautions, such as encrypting their ePHI, a missing flash drive incident helped to motivate a change.

“It didn’t count as a data breach because the information was encrypted, but we still opted to notify our clients. The real shot in the arm was knowing that we were using servers in separate offices with no centralized system. A fire, disgruntled employee, break-in, or any other mishap would be a huge loss,” shared Patch.

Northeast spent a solid year planning a system that would allow practitioners to make detailed clinical notes immediately after each visit, without requiring a return trip to the office, or storing any patient information on paper, laptop, or other portable device. After comparing the benefits and costs of many solutions, they selected Online Tech’s fully managed, HIPAA compliant cloud.“Other companies offered similar services for less money, but not the same level of security. We needed to know we could speak to someone at any moment. We wanted a service, not just a product,” Patch emphasized. “Online Tech asked questions and listened to everything we needed and actually saved us money.”

Now Northeast’s practitioners can securely use their laptops after each patient visit to complete documentation from the comfort of their car with secure VPN connections to Online Tech’s cloud. Patient information is never stored on paper, portable drives, or laptops, so even if a device is lost or stolen, patient records are safe in Online Tech’s independently HIPAA audited data centers.

While they anticipate 50% growth next year, they won’t have to increase their IT infrastructure spend for 3 years. As an added bonus, the cloud solution eased the requirements on their new laptops for each practitioner, saving Northeast enough to pay for more than nine months of HIPAA compliant cloud hosting.

“When we looked at the cost savings, improved efficiencies, and increased security, I thought to myself ‘“How do I not do this? I’d have to be an idiot not to do this.’”, reflected Patch. “Online Tech made it easy. These guys never made us feel stupid. Ever. They could break it down and explain what everything was and why. I understood everything we were signing.”

About Online Tech

Online Tech (www.OnlineTech.com) is the leader in secure and compliant hosting services including private cloud hosting, managed cloud hosting, hybrid cloud hosting, managed dedicated servers, disaster recovery and offsite backup services, and Michigan colocation. Intelligent InSites Integrates RFID-enabled Enterprise Visibility Solution of Consumable Assets from WaveMark

Written by:

Enterprise RTLS software now provides hospitals with a streamlined solution to manage their consumable medical assets

FARGO, N.D. and LITTLETON, Mass., March 13, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — Intelligent InSites, Inc., the leading provider of enterprise real-time location systems (RTLS) software helping hospitals improve patient satisfaction and operational performance while supporting multiple RFID and RTLS technologies, and WaveMark, Inc.  have announced the integration of WaveMark’s enterprise visibility solution of consumable assets including medical implantable devices and supplies with the Intelligent InSites enterprise RTLS software solution.

“At Intelligent InSites, we recognize that our healthcare customers use a variety of systems that meet the unique, function-specific needs of their organization,” said Ralf Mehnert-Meland, Director of Developer/OEM Relationships at Intelligent InSites. “While a system involving multiple, non-integrated applications can work, user experience and the ability to produce consolidated reports are severely limited. To deliver both flexibility and ease of use, we enable third-party applications, such as WaveMark’s enterprise visibility solution of consumable assets including its Cardiac Catheterization Lab solution, to integrate seamlessly with the Intelligent InSites solution.”

“WaveMark provides a complete consumable asset tracking solution that consists of RFID-enabled smart cabinets, business intelligence software, and point of care stations to drive clinical workflow and supply chain optimization. Our system enables hospitals to ensure that clinicians have the right product for the right patient at the right time, thereby improving the quality of patient care,” said Sabina Chadha, Executive Vice President of Worldwide Sales and Marketing at WaveMark. “Through our integration with Intelligent InSites, we can provide a seamless environment for healthcare professionals and enhanced analytics for process improvement.”

According to Chadha, with the cloud-based RFID-enabled supply chain management solution from WaveMark, hospitals are able to better manage their inventory levels by adjusting par levels to match usage more closely, eliminating waste from expired products. In addition, WaveMark’s solution can conduct detailed analysis on device usage per room and physician. This information supports effective inventory consumption and regulatory compliance.

The Intelligent InSites RTLS software solution — which provides a unified user interface for multiple enterprise-wide RTLS applications, integrations, connectivity, 3rd-party solutions, and RTLS hardware technologies — enables hospitals to achieve meaningful and measurable hard-dollar cost savings while improving patient satisfaction and patient care.
