Ievo Fingerprint Reader with Lumidigm MSI Sensor Receives Raves from Benchmark
Written by: EMR and EHR News“…with regard to scan credibility, the MSI sensor is certainly the best we’ve seen!” —Benchmark magazine, May 2012
ALBUQUERQUE, NM – May 15, 2012 – Lumidigm today announced that Benchmark magazine, after conducting a competitive test of fingerprint readers, concluded, “use of the MSI technology, and the consistency with which it performed in conditions that would see other units simply fail really does set the [Lumidigm] technology apart from its peers.”
The May 2012 article in the British journal begins, “One of the biggest issues with biometrics-based fingerprint readers is that many models will struggle to obtain a clear and usable scan if the digit being presented is damp, dirty or damaged. This is because most sensors rely on an optical scan only. However, multispectral imaging (MSI) [from Lumidigm] can provide a more robust solution.”
Lumidigm partner Ievo™ submitted its Ultimate™ reader with the Lumidigm sensor for the Benchmark test. Ievo Managing Director Shaun Oakes reports, “Benchmark is known for its rigorous testing methods and independent reviews. We welcomed the opportunity to show what the superior Lumidigm technology brings to our fingerprint reader and to our customers.”
“This review verifies for many people what we already knew from field experience,” asserts Lumidigm Vice President, Transaction Systems Bill Spence. “Now, independent testing confirms the superior fingerprint reading capabilities that Lumidigm technology brings to any application. Customers expect better performance now and Lumidigm is providing it.”

aptiQmobile™ Keys from Ingersoll Rand Security Technologies Turn Smart Phones into Credentials
Written by: EMR and EHR NewsCARMEL, IN, March 15, 2011– Ingersoll Rand Security Technologies, a leading global provider of security and safety solutions and manufacturer of contactless smart credentials and readers, introduced its new aptiQmobile™ web-based key management system. The system will send access control credentials over the air to Near Field Communications (NFC)-enabled smartphones, allowing people to use their phones to enter buildings in place of their smart-card ID badges.
“Many smartphones currently on the market are already NFC-enabled with more models being launched every month,” emphasizes Jeremy Earles, Ingersoll Rand Security Technologies product marketing manager, readers and credentials. “NFC-enabled phones can send encrypted data a short distance to a NFC-enabled reader located, for instance, next to a retail cash register or a door lock.
“To turn these smartphones into an access control credential, you simply download the aptiQmobile app to your smart phone and use it to retrieve your secure mobile key that was set up by your access control site administrator,” explains Earles. “Once your mobile key is downloaded, open the app and tap it to the reader just like using a smart card. It’s very secure and extremely easy to use.”
Research shows that nearly two-thirds of college students are interested in using their mobile phones in place of their ID card and aptiQmobile brings the industry one step closer to that reality. Ingersoll Rand is currently conducting aptiQmobile pilot trials across the country to issue credentials over the air to phones and using those phones in day-to-day access control scenarios. The aptiQmobile management system will become commercially available later this year as NFC-enabled smartphones become more widely available.
At the ISC West Exposition, to be held in Las Vegas March 28-30, attendees visiting the Ingersoll Rand Security Technologies booth 16053 will see a smartphone with the aptiQmobile app being used just like a smart card (or proximity card) to open a locked door. They will also learn about a successful pilot program using aptiQmobile at a major East Coast university.

Symantec Introduces Intelligent Authentication to Combat Evolving Threats
Written by: EMR and EHR NewsWith healthcare records, containing perhaps the most private and vital personal information, becoming electronic, user access policy is key. Getting the proper personnel the correct level of access to the right information requires layers of authentication, and the tug of war between security and user-friendliness stands to increase complexity for the process.
Symantec is announcing a powerful new addition to its cloud-based user authentication service, Symantec VIP. Symantec VIP Intelligent Authentication enables strong authentication while providing end users with a seamless authentication experience.
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – October 11, 2011 – Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced Symantec VIP Intelligent Authentication, a powerful addition to its cloud-based user authentication service, Symantec VIP. Dedicated to protecting an organization’s network and applications against unauthorized access, Symantec VIP Intelligent Authentication enables strong authentication that is both effective and unobtrusive for the end user.
Symantec VIP Intelligent Authentication employs advanced security technologies including: system fingerprinting, user behavior monitoring and geolocation access monitoring. In addition, Symantec VIP Intelligent Authentication leverages Symantec DeepSight intelligence, which has some of the most extensive data on IP address reputation and URL reputation, in order to thwart potentially malicious activity by denying access.
“As more organizations push to online` and mobile channels to deliver services to their end users, the need for simple, yet strong authentication solutions will continue to grow as a password only approach is simply not secure,” said Fran Rosch, vice president, Trust Services and Identity Protection, Symantec. “The new VIP Intelligent Authentication gives organizations one of the most advanced authentication solutions in the market that is delivered as a cost effective cloud-based service and provides end users with a seamless authentication experience.”
Superior Protection from Emerging Threats
Attackers are constantly changing tactics by leveraging malware and social engineering efforts to steal password credentials and hopping between compromised hosts to launch attacks, thus organizations must stay ahead of these emerging threats.
Symantec VIP Intelligent Authentication offers a unique suite of tools providing among the best possible protection for customers. Using DeepSight intelligence derived from the Symantec Global Intelligence Network, VIP Intelligent Authentication can quickly identify and prevent potentially damaging login attempts from IP addresses associated with known attack actors. VIP Intelligent Authentication can also strengthen the authentication process by leveraging devices already equipped with Symantec Endpoint Protection, Norton, or Intel Identity Protection Technology (IPT) to better prevent logins from unknown or risky endpoints.
Further demonstrating its dedication to the security and management of mobile devices, Symantec VIP Intelligent Authentication extends strong authentication to web-based applications accessed from these devices. With the influx of mobile devices across the globe, organizations can now provide secure multi-factor authentication using VIP Intelligent Authentication.
Convenient, Strong Authentication
While most organizations are aware that simple usernames and passwords no longer provide adequate resilience against today’s sophisticated attacks, they’re also concerned that an onerous technology may hurt adoption and usage. Symantec VIP Intelligent Authentication solves this problem, providing strong, multi-factor authentication without changing the login experience for users. All the strong authentication—such as device verification, behavior analysis, reputation and geo location analysis—happens seamlessly. Only if a login is deemed suspicious, is the user challenged to provide more information such as a onetime password that is sent over email or SMS.
A Comprehensive Solution
As part of the Symantec Validation and ID Protection Service (VIP), VIP Intelligent Authentication validates Symantec’s promise to deliver a comprehensive, flexible, and robust set of authentication solutions. With Symantec VIP, organizations can deploy not only risk-based authentication, but also hardware or software one-time password (OTP) tokens, mobile OTP tokens, and SMS or voice-enabled OTP authentication—all from a single, unified authentication solution. Strong authentication, coupled with Symantec’s Encryption and Data Loss Prevention products, not only enhances the VIP portfolio but provides a firm foundation for an information-centric approach to protecting an organizations’ data from unwanted viewers.
Availability
Symantec VIP Intelligent Authentication is available now and included with Symantec VIP at no additional incremental cost. Symantec VIP is delivered as a cloud-based service and licensed on an annual per-user subscription basis. For more information, please visit: http://symantec.com/business/

Breakthrough in Secure Mobile Device Access Using a Universal Corporate Identity
Written by: EMR and EHR NewsPLEASANTON, Calif., February 17, 2011 — idOnDemand, the pioneers in smart identification, introduces the world’s first “clientless” One-Time Password (OTP) mobility solution using a contactless smart identity card. The idOnDemand SmartID mobile technology revolutionizes corporate VPN and information access from mobile devices. Using its patent pending technology, users simply touch their idOnDemand Personal Identity Verification (PIV) compatible corporate ID to facilitate a highly secure login from their tablet computer, smart phone or hand-held mobile phone.
With this groundbreaking extension to idOnDemand’s managed identity service, customers can use one identity card for building access, computer access, cloud security and now compatible mobile devices. This solution replaces the need to carry expiring hardware OTP tokens with hard to read LCD screens or install and manage soft token clients on personal and corporate mobile devices.
“With the increase in workforce mobility, organizations are being caught off guard by the use of personal tablet computers and smart phones within the corporate environment. Personal devices are being used to store or interact with sensitive systems and data, often only protected by a username or password,” said Jason Hart, Chief Executive Officer at idOnDemand. “We are at the forefront of innovation by bringing to market a solution that securely authenticates to corporate or cloud resources without the need for a client or custom application to be installed on personal mobile devices. By simply touching your corporate identity card on your device and entering your pin you can gain secure access to resources from any compatible mobile device.”
idOnDemand SmartIDs can be used with any OATH compliant authentication server or managed authentication service. Unlike other mobile solutions such as SMS or soft tokens, the idOnDemand solution works out of the box on a new compatible device, eliminating the need for software to be installed. Additionally, users do not depend on network availability or text fees. The idOnDemand SmartID mobile feature can redirect the user to a predefined URL after presenting their card to the phone where they securely authenticate to applications, cloud resources like Google apps, salesforce.com and other corporate websites.
“Leveraging industry standards like OATH gives customers choice and flexibility,” said Donald Malloy, chair of the Marketing Committee for OATH. “We are pleased that idOnDemand selected OATH as the backbone of their One-Time Password strategy.”
The idOnDemand SmartID mobile functionality is unique because all personal information related to the individual, and the logic that drives the behavior, is on the PIV compatible smart card and not the mobile device. Organizations no longer have to provision and manage mobile software clients in the traditional sense because there is no software to install. All of the management is done through policy and secure issuance of the corporate credential, enabling enterprises to embrace a single secure identity no matter how their people access corporate information.
The idOnDemand SmartID mobile feature is based on Near Field Communication (NFC) technology. This solution allows customers to deploy one infrastructure that supports both PIV x.509 certificate authentication and OTP authentication when certificates are not practical.
The idOnDemand SmartID mobile feature is now available as part of the idOnDemand managed identity service and completes the idOnDemand vision of having one secure identity for buildings, computers, in the cloud and on the go.
About idOnDemand
idOnDemand delivers a standards based, single trusted identity and smart card solution. Using the idOnDemand managed service, organizations can quickly, easily and cost effectively grant trusted access for employees, customers and partners to information and assets such as IT systems, remote access, data encryption, secure email, building access and mobile authentication. Authorized users no longer need to carry multiple tokens, ID cards, building access cards or remember multiple passwords.
idOnDemand has offices in the United States and Australia. For more information, visit www.idOnDemand.com.

The Lumidigm fingerprint solution will be featured in Booth #5242 at the HIMSS 11 Exhibition to be held February 21-23 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla.
Lumidigm Mercury multispectral imaging sensors capture fingerprint data beneath the surface of the skin so that dryness or gloves create no problems for reliable reads. Using multiple wavelengths of light and advanced polarization techniques to extract unique fingerprint characteristics from both the surface and subsurface of the skin, Lumidigm’s sensors provide results that are more consistent, more inclusive and more tamper resistant than conventional biometric readers.
As a result, healthcare practitioners can more efficiently meet the new demands of secure healthcare IT as they navigate the world of electronic medical records and multiple systems, attempting to protect information for both patients and clinicians. Instead of each employee being issued a password, card or token, the Lumidigm biometric solution lets multiple users access the same workstation or medical device with nothing more than their finger. In most cases, the Lumidigm Mercury fingerprint sensors can be deployed simply as the necessary infrastructure is typically already in place.
The research firm of Frost & Sullivan recently awarded the New Product Innovation of the Year Award, Fingerprint Biometrics, North America, 2010, to Lumidigm. According to Frost & Sullivan, Lumidigm’s “innovative technology allows Lumidigm fingerprint sensors to provide highly accurate biometric data even in adverse conditions where traditional fingerprint sensors fail.”
