Health Information Exchange Formation Guide Named HIMSS Book of the Year

Written by:

Authored by executives from Mosaica Partners, a nationally recognized HIE consulting firm, the award-winning book is considered the essential guide to HIE formation and planning

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – March 21, 2012 – The Healthcare Information Management and Systems Society (HIMSS) has named The Health Information Exchange Formation Guide its 2011 Book of the Year.

The book and its co-authors, well-known health information consultants Laura Kolkman, RN, MS, FHIMSS and Bob Brown of Mosaica Partners, were honored on Feb. 23 at the HIMSS Awards Banquet, part of the 2012 Annual HIMSS Conference and Exhibition.

“Each year, the HIMSS Book of the Year award recognizes a book that offers outstanding practical guidance and/or strategic insight for healthcare information and management systems professionals,” said Fran Perveiler, vice president of communications, HIMSS. “Congratulations to authors Laura Kolkman and Bob Brown, winners of the 2011 HIMSS Book of the Year Award for their book, The Health Information Exchange Formation Guide: The Authoritative Guide for Planning and Forming an HIE in Your State, Region, or Community.”

Published by HIMSS in February 2011, The Health Information Exchange Formation Guide has received national acclaim for its practical approach to forming state-, regional- or community-based HIE organizations. The book leverages the insights Kolkman and Brown gleaned from their work with clients, as well as from extensive research and interviews with recognized HIE pioneers.  It provides the knowledge and tools that emerging HIE initiatives need to develop a framework for long-term sustainability.

“HIEs play a significant role in ACOs and new emerging care models and are a catalyst for transforming the nation’s healthcare system,” said Kolkman. “The problem is that many organizations and individuals do not know where to begin when planning an HIE. This book, based on our proven HIE Formation Methodology, gets them on the right path.”

“Over the past decade, we have learned about HIEs through the successes and failures of the front runners in exchange initiatives,” Brown added. “By applying these lessons, emerging HIEs can dramatically increase their odds of success, and establish their role in improving the overall efficiency of the healthcare delivery process, enhancing patient outcomes and significantly lowering costs.”

The HIE Formation Guide has garnered industry-wide praise for its structured approach that incorporates leading practices in the planning, formation and operational stages of HIE initiatives. In addition to a high-level history of HIE and in-depth discussion of its importance and role in transforming healthcare, the book includes a step-by-step guide, numerous case studies, examples, checklists and references.

The Health Information Exchange Formation Guide provides an excellent and diverse grouping of ‘pearls’ from recognized leaders within our industry,” said Dick Thompson, CEO of Grand Junction, Colo.-based Quality Health Network. “I recommend it for nascent as well as more mature organizations, since one never knows where one may find a pearl of wisdom that is applicable to a specific business problem.”

Adds MedVirginia CEO Michael Matthews: “This is an exciting and extremely critical time for health information exchange. The Health Information Exchange Formation Guide provides practical, real-world guidance on important issues facing HIEs today.”

The Health Information Exchange Formation Guide is an excellent resource for professionals and executives that are starting, developing or implementing HIE networks,” said Jeff Blair, director of health informatics at LCF Research, New Mexico Health Information Collaborative. “The Guide is so well-organized that it can be used as a comprehensive textbook, a reference to relevant case studies, or a quick reference guide to specific HIE topics. “

The Health Information Exchange Formation Guide is available for purchase in the HIMSS online store and as a HIMSS eBook. For more information, including the table of contents and chapter summaries, helpful downloadable figures and checklists, visit www.himss.org/hieformationguide.

MZI HealthCare Demos EZ-ANALYTICS and EZ-CARE at HIMSS – #HIMSS12

Written by:

Analytics, Predictive Modeling and Comprehensive Care Management Solutions Facilitate Rapid Data Transformation in an Era of Accountable Care

LAS VEGAS – February 20, 2012 – MZI HealthCare, LLC (MZIHC) (www.mzihc.com), a leading provider of transformative healthcare solutions, today announced that it will demonstrate its new EZ-ANALYTICS™ product and enhanced EZ-CARE™ solution at the 2012 Annual HIMSS Conference & Exhibition held February 20-24, 2012 in Las Vegas. To see the demonstrations visit the company at booth #12220 and pick up a new white paper, “Healthcare Reform: Successful Strategies for IT-Enabled Transformation in an Era of Accountable, Coordinated Care,” written by Dr. Steven Gerst, renowned author and healthcare expert.

EZ-ANALYTICS is a sophisticated healthcare data warehouse, analytics, and predictive modeling solution that enables healthcare organizations—and accountable care organizations (ACOs) in particular—to consolidate clinical and financial data from multiple sources to a single enterprise solution, which they can use to benchmark themselves against peers. With data aggregated in one place, organizations then have access to a complete 360-degree view of their healthcare data.

EZ-ANALYTICS offers a full-spectrum of analytics and predictive modeling capabilities. It has the power to analyze data in multiple ways, perform flexible slice-and-dice reporting, and predict utilization and costs. For example, EZ-ANALYTICS enables organizations to analyze the chronic conditions and co-morbidities that exist in given populations. Using sophisticated data models, they can predict the healthcare needs, utilization trends, and costs associated with populations—and even drill down to episodes of care, as well as profiles of patients and providers. In addition, EZ-ANALYTICS tracks and reports on comparative benchmarks and more than 250 quality measures which include the 33 quality measures Medicare requires under current ACO rules, HEDIS and PQRS.

MZI HealthCare will also be demonstrating EZ-CARE, a comprehensive care management solution. Designed by case managers for case managers, it drives an integrated approach to complex case management, utilization management, and disease management. Ensuring that a holistic view of patient care and evidence-based medicine is considered in treatment plans, EZ-CARE helps contain the costs of high-risk patient cases, while enabling organizations to improve quality of care. In addition, with its browser-based platform, EZ-CARE is now fully integrated with the EZ-CAP® v6 solution—more closely aligning care management with benefit administration to better ensure proper patient eligibility, authorization of services, and other complementary capabilities

MZI HealthCare has an in-depth understanding of what organizations need in today’s era of accountable care and healthcare reform,” said NC Murthy, CEO of MZIHC. “Our integrated solutions offer data analytics and predictive modeling to help minimize the financial risk in future contracts, and the comprehensive care management capabilities to oversee the most risky segments of patient populations. These advanced systems—in coordination with our other EZ solutions—help to facilitate a more collaborative and preventive model that rewards quality as well as the appropriate stewardship of healthcare resources.”

TriCore Reference Laboratories Selects 4medica Ambulatory iEHR to Advance Connectivity to New Mexico Physicians

Written by:

Leading laboratory revolutionizes traditional services via cloud technology to help medical practices achieve multi-system integration, data exchange and reform initiatives

LAS VEGAS-HIMSS Annual Conference-4medica booth #449, Feb. 20, 2012-In a bold move that recognizes the need to augment its core lab services to help physicians address health reform and other challenges, TriCore Reference Laboratories today announced selecting 4medica to drive lab and patient data integration, interoperability and connectivity. TriCore will offer the 4medica Ambulatory Cloud Integrated Electronic Health Record (4medica iEHR®) to approximately 4,700 physicians practicing medicine in the state of New Mexico, many of whom work in rural areas lacking advanced technology.

TriCore is an independent, full service reference laboratory serving hospitals, physicians and their patients throughout New Mexico and the Southwest. Through its sponsors, The University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center and Presbyterian Healthcare Services, TriCore provides state-of-the-art laboratory testing, anatomic pathology, and consultative services. 4medica’s certified iEHR solution’s bi-directional connectivity and seamless data exchange capabilities position reference labs and practices to navigate the economic and governmental changes responsible for driving connected healthcare.

“We have an urgent need to replace numerous legacy systems that are difficult and costly to interface, maintain and use,” said Jessie Salk, CEO of TriCore. “We chose 4medica because their iEHR is at the forefront of truly integrated SaaS health record technology. The solution’s combined lab automation and medical record features best met our changing business needs and vision to evolve our services to the next level of excellence. We expect 4medica’s iEHR to enhance the physician experience ordering tests and receiving results, streamline billing processes, obtain higher quality information, and monitor and analyze data in near real time-all of which vastly contribute to improved patient care and outcomes.”

Rapid adoption of EHRs and looming health reforms including the phased roll out of Meaningful Use, the shift from fee-for-service to value-based purchasing and pay-for-performance payment programs such as accountable care organizations (ACOs), and the proliferation of health information exchanges (HIEs) are also contributing factors to TriCore’s urgency in upgrading its lab service approach.

“As a local partner and solution provider to physicians, we actively seek innovative ways to meet their patient care needs through our quality laboratory test results and technology along with Meaningful Use requirements and compliance with government regulations,” said Salk. “Because physicians are extremely busy professionals, our goal is to give them back at least 15 minutes of their day. And to survive the seismic structural shift that is coming, we must provide additional value by giving practices the ability to interface their electronic records with 4medica’s iEHR lab module and to obtain a complete comprehensive EHR with the same product.”

“We are excited to partner with one of the nation’s visionary organizations pioneering a new era of reference laboratory customer service where physicians consider EHRs an important part of their daily workflow,” said Oleg Bess, M.D., 4medica’s CEO. “We look forward to a long partnership with TriCore in supporting our joint mission to convert physicians from low-level EHR users to efficient, sophisticated users, which will increase the likelihood of quality improvements and financial rewards.”

About TriCore

Founded in 1998 and headquartered in Albuquerque, TriCore Reference Laboratories leads the Southwest in providing comprehensive laboratory information of exceptional quality and value. Leadership is achieved by dedicated people who support innovation, advanced technology, customer service, education and research. Through its commitment to quality, TriCore is one of only 18 labs in the United States, and the first-ever multi-site laboratory, to meet the rigorous requirements of CAP 15189SM. Written by:

HIMSS conference attendees can try T-System’s easy-to-use solutions themselves at the hands-on demos at Booth #4012. Additionally, as part of its commitment to promote improved information exchange for more effective patient care, T-System will participate in the Interoperability Showcase™ at Booth #11000.

New interoperable solutions and capabilities demonstrate how T-System is redefining emergency care through technology

LAS VEGAS – Feb. 15, 2012 – Despite increases in uninsured ED patient volumes and healthcare reform challenges, T-System, Inc.‘s hospital clients are improving clinical outcomes, patient throughput, and revenue by the millions while simultaneously meeting Stage 1 Meaningful Use criteria and preparing for ICD-10. T-System will demonstrate the interoperable technology driving these remarkable emergency medicine success stories and also unveil new high-tech capabilities at the annual Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society’s (HIMSS) Conference on Feb. 20-24 at the Venetian Sands Expo Center in Las Vegas.

“It’s critical for hospital leaders to select vendors that can solve pressing short-term problems, but those vendors should also maintain a broader, long-term perspective and an investment in the future of healthcare delivery,” said T-System CEO Sunny Sanyal. “T-System’s focus at HIMSS is on how the ED can be leveraged to improve the entire care management process so the whole health system can feel the benefit.”

Among the must-see solutions and events from T-System:

T-System Virtual ED (Booth #4012) and Interoperability Showcase™ (Booth #11000 in Hall G):

  • T-System will present a new solution focused on improving patient care continuity and supporting the ACO model of healthcare delivery. In this exhibit, attendees will see how an integrated web-based referral management tool will help reduce readmissions, strengthen hospital-physician alignment and connect the care team to a patient’s information. Attendees will also learn how the solution gives facilities an edge in recruiting, retaining and winning the loyalty of referring physicians.
  • Further supporting care continuity, T-System will be among the first-ever vendors to demonstrate how an ED might contribute information that would enable a smoother patient hand-off process. At the Interoperability Showcase™, The T SystemEV® will interoperate with an outpatient and inpatient EHR and health information exchange, starting with properly identifying the patient, retrieving a referral document, and creating a summary of the ED visit to be consumed by physicians outside of the ED. The demonstration of this new standard will help further the mission of IHE in promoting interoperability across healthcare.
  • More closely connecting patients to the healthcare experience, T-System will preview iTriage connectivity through mobile health solutions. The iTriage smartphone and Web application display hospital information such as services and ED wait times. Patients can also check in before arriving in the ED, giving hospitals the opportunity to triage patients based on their symptoms and greet them upon arrival. As a result, the hospital and patients increase engagement with each other, thereby improving the overall patient experience.
  • T-System employees will be accessing applications using a “tap-in to sign on” badge system through eXactACCESS by HealthCast, Inc. eXactACCESS is a comprehensive single sign-on solution that provides a fast and secure way for clinicians to access the ED electronic health record (EHR), especially when changing workstations. At the same time, it reinforces HIPAA-compliant behaviors.

Meaningful Use Senior Education Session (11 a.m. PST, Tuesday, Feb. 21, Marcello 4506):

T SystemEV’s capabilities to support the phased rollout of the HITECH Act compliance efforts will be highlighted in the education session, “Emergency Medicine EHR Helps Drive Enterprise Meaningful Use Readiness.” So far, 42 hospitals have attested to Stage 1 using T SystemEV. Roger Neal, vice president and chief information officer, Duncan Regional Hospital, and Barbara DiMercurio, R.N., MBA, director, Emergency Services, University of Louisville Hospital, co-present their distinct strategies leveraging The T SystemEV ® certified ED information system to attest for enterprise-wide Meaningful Use and to facilitate data integration.

HIStalk HIMSS Conference Booth Crawl: T-System will be giving away an iPad2 as part of its sponsorship in the first HIStalk HIMSS booth crawl. The booth crawl entails contestants visiting booths or web sites to obtain answers to secret questions akin to a scavenger hunt.

“We will continue our focus to help emergency departments collaborate, share and work even more seamlessly and connected as evidenced of our busy year unveiling new technology solutions,” said Robert Hitchcock, M.D., FACEP, T-System vice president and chief medical informatics officer. “We’re proud to be the industry’s preferred ED technology provider, empowering our clients to be successful in qualifying for Meaningful Use incentives, meeting regulatory requirements, and advancing clinical, operational and financial performance.”

Diversinet Formally Names Dr. Hon Pak as CEO

Written by:

Secure mHealth leader Diversinet Corp. announced today that Dr. Hon Pak has been formally named CEO after holding that position on an interim basis. He also has joined the company’s Board of Directors.

A healthcare IT innovator, Dr. Pak previously served as the first physician CIO of the U.S. Army Medical Department and president of the American Telemedicine Association, among many distinguished roles.

Below you will find his views on the need for care coordination and the new direction he sees for Diversinet in that area.

Visionary Healthcare IT Executive Discusses Company’s Mobile Solution for Care Coordination

TORONTO, Feb. 14, 2012Diversinet Corp. (TSX Venture: DIV, OTCBB: DVNTF), a leader in secure mobile health, announced today that its Board of Directors has formally appointed Dr. Hon Pak as the company’s Chief Executive Officer.

Dr. Pak, who had been serving as the interim CEO since December 2011, was also appointed to the company’s Board of Directors. Prior to his role as interim CEO, he was a member of Diversinet’s executive advisory board since September 2011.

“Having Dr. Pak join Diversinet as the full-time CEO is a game changer for the company,” said Alan Portela, a Diversinet director and CEO of Airstrip Technologies. “Hon’s credibility, experience and leadership in steering the IT transformation of the U.S. Army Medical Department along with his new focused vision will make Diversinet a more significant player in mobile health.”

After a distinguished 28-year career with the U.S. Army, Pak, now 48, brings to Diversinet accomplishments including appointments as the first physician Chief Information Officer of the U.S. Army Medical Department as well as the Army’s first Chief Medical Information Officer. In addition, he has held prestigious positions outside the Army, such as president and board member of the American Telemedicine Association. He is a distinguished graduate of the United States Military Academy, and he holds a medical degree from the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences. He is also a fellow of the American Board of Dermatology.

Pak commented, “Healthcare is becoming unsustainable, and changes are now in place that will impact the landscape of how healthcare will be delivered.” Pak cited shifting market forces, such as the rising costs of healthcare that are prompting the overall industry to re-evaluate its current models. New models, such as the patient-centered medical home and accountable care, represent new ways to bring about a more patient-centered and systems-based approach that improves the value of healthcare with a focus on wellness and prevention. Pak believes that fundamental to this shift is a focus on patient engagement and care coordination. He stated, “Providers can no longer provide episodic care, but they are now responsible for leading a team responsible for coordinating and managing all of a patient’s care.”

Pak accepted the permanent CEO role with Diversinet because of its proven core secure mobile platform and his conviction that mobile devices will be critical to healthcare. “In the past 60 days as interim CEO, I have had the time to validate our technology and assess the market potential for Diversinet,” said Pak. “Our technology is much more than mobile security. The core technology has the components to support and enable care coordination through mobility, and we are now developing a marketing and technology strategy to become a dominant player to mobilize care coordination.”

Diversinet intends to launch a new strategic direction leveraging its patented, award-winning MobiSecure® technology. Components include a Care Coordination Engine, providing configure once-deploy many capability for clients that need a HIPAA-compliant tracking/case management tool to empower consumers/patients and providers/staff. Diversinet also has a MobiSecure Security SDK for clients (with existing mobile applications or platforms) that need to manage PHI and security.

Pak simply believes that Diversinet “Powers Care Coordination Through Mobility.”

Under the terms of the employment agreement, Dr. Pak has been issued stock options to purchase up to 1,400,000 common shares of Diversinet Corp. exercisable at U.S.$0.30 per common share for a five-year term. The exercise of these options is subject to approval of an increase in the number of shares reserved under the stock option plan by shareholders at the next meeting of shareholders. Assuming such approval, there would be 8,984,362 common shares reserved for issuance in respect of available stock options under the plan.

GE Healthcare Empowers Patients with Advanced Online Patient Portal

Written by:

Health reform is changing the game for providers by incentivizing doing more with less. This means, among other things, improving patient communication, reducing redundant administrative tasks and elevating quality of care. What’s more, with Meaningful Use Stage 2 on the inevitable horizon, healthcare organizations are looking for ways to increase electronic access to meet patient engagement requirements. Additionally, consumers are increasingly taking control of their healthcare needs into their own hands; they want a simplified process and better access.

In essence, patient portals are transitioning from a nice-to-have to must-have technology.

In response to customer demand to boost the frequency and quality of patient communications in an increasingly self-service climate, GE Healthcare today introduced Centricity Patient Online 13. Centricity Patient Online is a flexible, scalable, and highly configurable patient portal designed to help large healthcare organizations:

  • Better engage patients and their families in their care.
  • Extend the provider workflow to the patient’s home with a range of easy-to-use, self-service tools.
  • Optimize staff and provider productivity.

Centricity Patient Online Portal Connects the Patient with the Provider

BARRINGTON, Ill. – Feb 2, 2012 – In response to customer demand for a better way to interact with patients in an increasingly self-service climate, GE Healthcare today introduced Centricity Patient Online 13.  Centricity Patient Online is a flexible, scalable, and highly configurable patient portal designed for large healthcare organizations.  By extending the provider workflow to the patient’s home with a range of easy-to-use self-service tools, Patient Online enhances patient communications, optimizes staff and provider productivity, and can help strengthen the provider’s market and competitive position.  It helps customers meet Meaningful Use Stage 1 patient and family engagement criteria and prepare them for expected Stage 2 requirements.

In fact, during this challenging time in healthcare, GE Healthcare’s Centricity Patient Online may be just what the doctor ordered. With Patient Online 13, patients can connect with their healthcare providers through the Web or their mobile device to schedule appointments, pay bills, manage health information, complete pre-visit forms, send secure messages, begin an eVisit and respond to alerts and reminders sent by the practice.

“This release continues to advance Patient Online as one of the leading patient portal products,” said Denise Cuddeback, assistant vice president at Carolinas Physician Network, where the implementation of Patient Online’s direct scheduling features have reduced the network’s no-show rate to 1% for appointments directly scheduled through the portal. “The features in this release include impressive workflow enhancements, improved bi-directional patient communication and patient-directed security controls.”

A key focus of healthcare reforms, including Meaningful Use, Patient-Centered Medical Home, and Accountable Care Organizations, is to ensure that individuals and families are engaged as partners in their care. The end goal is improved clinical outcomes, and, ultimately, reduced costs to the system as a whole. A tethered patient portal, such as Patient Online, is a key to the evolution of care.

“Studies have shown that people who are more engaged with their health care may experience better health outcomes,” said Jane Sarasohn-Kahn, health economist and analyst who writes with the blog Health Populi. “Patient Online enables greater health engagement by giving people access to lab test results, allowing people to know their numbers, and to make appointments and pay health care bills online.”

A result of continual customer collaboration, Patient Online 13 offers the tightest connection of any patient portal with GE’s market-leading Centricity Business revenue cycle management solution and interoperability with virtually any standards-based Electronic Medical Record (EMR).

“Fletcher Allen Health Care’s  MyHealth Online portal is an incredibly powerful tool,” said Chuck Podesta, Chief Information Officer at Fletcher Allen Health Care, where GE’s Patient Online has been in use since June 2011. “Patient Online allows for flexible integration and, as a result, we have been able to leverage the administrative, financial, and clinical patient workflows through a single user interface at FAHC. The patient response is incredible and, since it fits right into the existing workflows, our staff loves it, too.”

Healthcare organizations today are facing unprecedented fiscal challenges. To balance their budgets, many are now searching for cost-effective and efficient alternatives to budget-busters like postal mail for pre-visit forms, appointment and preventative screening reminders, and large call centers with long hold times, high drop rates, and non-stop telephone tag.

”This product is well positioned for today’s medical environment,” said Michael Friguletto, vice president and general manager of GE Healthcare IT. “We look forward to helping our customers reduce costs, increase access and enhance the quality of care they’re able to provide their patients. When patients demand 24/7 access and interactivity with their providers and their medical records, it’s a great time to be in healthcare.”

GE Healthcare will demonstrate the capabilities of Centricity Patient Online 13 at the HIMSS conference at the Venetian Sands Expo Center, Las Vegas, booth 2635.
