Adventist Health System Accelerates Revenue Receipt, Improves Workflow – #HIMSS12

Written by:

RealMed helps AHS Improve Billing Practices and Standardize Processes

LAS VEGAS–(BUSINESS WIRE)– RealMed helped Adventist Health System achieve 17 percent better time-to-payment, automated workflows, and standardization across multiple physician practices and seven central billing offices, according to a case study released today at the Healthcare Information Management Systems Society’s Annual Conference.

Adventist Health System is the focus of the case study, which details how the organization decreased time-to-payment by nine days per month through improved claim denial management, automated workflows and better management of physician practice billing processes using RealMed, an industry leading revenue cycle management solutions provider.

In a time when many hospitals are challenged with inefficient billing processes and disparate IT systems – particularly when integrating new physician practices – Adventist Health System found a solution to help standardize multiple billing offices using a common tool to drive revenue and improve workflow.

“RealMed helped us achieve our business goals,” said Tim Reiner, vice president of revenue cycle management for Adventist Health System. “We were hindered by the inefficiency of inconsistent and manual billing processes, and RealMed helped us overcome these obstacles.”

Adventist Health System, an Altamonte Springs, Fla.-based health care organization with 43 hospitals and 55,000 employees in 10 states, was able to reduce claim denials and lower the average age of accounts receivables with the help of RealMed.

“RealMed not only helps health care providers get paid faster, but is a proven solution to the many challenges facing health care organizations in today’s increasingly complex business environment,” said Russ Thomas, Availity’s chief operating officer and incoming CEO. “We’re proud that Adventist Health System is able to demonstrate and share the value that RealMed offers, so others can also realize these tremendous benefits to organizations of all sizes.”

RealMed, an Availity company, is based in Indianapolis, Ind. It uses the power of automated workflows to connect health plan and practice management systems, facilitating payments and transactions among patients, providers and health plans. Awarepoint Launches New Version of aware360°Suite of Real-time Location System Solutions at HIMSS – #HIMSS12

Written by:

Live product demonstrations and client case presentations to showcase how providers can enhance patient flow, increase efficiency, and improve asset management and availability

LAS VEGAS, HIMSS Conference, Booth 3412 – Feb. 21, 2012Awarepoint Corporation, the leading provider of real-time location system (RTLS) solutions for healthcare, today launched the new version of its aware360°Suite of real-time location system solutions at the HIMSS Annual Conference and Exhibition. Through live demonstrations and client case studies at booth #3412, the company will showcase aware360°Suite,the industry’s only complete RTLS solution that optimizes healthcare workflow, increases care team efficiency, and improves asset management and availability.

“Today’s hospitals and health systems are asked to do more with less, yet the biggest revenue-generating departments – emergency, surgery, cardiovascular, and oncology – can all be adversely impacted by the lack of real-time visibility of critical assets,” said Jay Deady, CEO of Awarepoint. “It is becoming all too clear that the ineffective utilization of high-value assets has a significant negative effect on clinical and patient care, not to mention process workflow. That’s why we are excited to introduce the new version of our flagship solution at the healthcare technology industry’s premier conference. The aware360°Suite expands the visibility and management of facility assets to dramatically increase top-line revenue growth without compromising quality of care.”

Awarepoint’s aware360°Suite translates real-time data into actionable intelligence by enabling hospitals and health systems to monitor the location of patients, staff, and assets. Users also can aggregate that information with their scheduling systems and electronic health records to improve operating efficiency, reduce costs, enhance equipment workflow, and augment staff productivity across their enterprise.

Recent enhancements to the aware360°Suite allow administrators and care providers to advance the quality, efficiency, experience, and economics of healthcare. The aware360°Suite modules include:

  • awareAssets – enables organizations to locate and manage assets, monitor temperature and humidity, reduce shrinkage and rentals, increase equipment utilization, and track sterilization of instrument trays.
  • awarePatientCare - facilitates patient flow by expediting communication about the patient’s care plan and condition, ensuring awareness of roadblocks in care, and supporting data analysis to drive process improvement.
  • awareCareTeam - improves communication and care coordination by simplifying the process of locating care team members; also integrates with communication systems to streamline synchronization of personnel.
  • awareSurgical - measures location, movement and interactions between patients, staff and equipment to identify and communicate care milestones, help staff anticipate and manage their workflow, and streamline perioperative patient flow.
  • awareED - helps hospital staff visualize care progression of patients in the emergency department, simplifies access to patient information and improves ED throughput.
  • awareRadiology - leverages location tracking and workflow rules and interfaces with scheduling systems to move patients efficiently through their procedure.
  • awareHandHygiene - captures information and generates reports, enabling facilities to ensure hand hygiene compliance by physicians, nurses and other employees to reduce preventable infections caused poor hand washing and food handling practices.

Also being unveiled this week is Awarepoint’s bed-level accurate sensor, the S3B. “Ninety percent of all workflow milestones are driven by patient-staff interactions that occur at the bedside and the S3B allows us to detect those interactions with 100% certainty,” says Awarepoint’s CTO Matt Perkins. “Working in concert with our room-level accurate S2C workflow sensor, we can drive any aware360 Suit module and be confident that the care path is automated without error.” Awarepoint is wrapping up technical trials this quarter and expects to make the S3B generally available later this year.

Live booth demonstrations of Awarepoint’s aware360°Suite will be available throughout the conference showcasing how the solutions increase patient throughput and increase capacity management. In addition, attendees can register for a live demonstration with an Awarepoint representative for a chance to win an iPad 2.

On Wednesday, Feb. 22, HIMSS conference participants can attend in-booth presentations from Awarepoint clients. The presenters will describe how they were able to achieve unprecedented outcomes and hard return on investment. Lawrence Grossflam, director, clinical systems, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and Gregg Stepp, director, supply chain operations, Texoma Medical Center will be sharing their stories in a panel presentation at 4:00 p.m. Attendees can R.S.V.P. here.

Massachusetts eHealth Collaborative (MAeHC) and MITRE to Participate in popHealth Demonstration at HIMSS 2012 Interoperability Showcase – #HIMSS12

Written by:

The Massachusetts eHealth Collaborative (MAeHC), a non-profit pioneer and leader in healthcare delivery through health information technology, announced today that it has partnered with MITRE’s Center for Transforming Health to demonstrate comparative measure results for meaningful use quality metrics reporting at the HIMSS 2012 Annual Conference & Exhibition in Las Vegas, NV from February 20-24.  MAeHC will showcase its recently ONC-ATB certified commercially- available Quality Data Center (QDC) in comparison with the ONC-sponsored popHealth tool by MITRE to evaluate quality measures at the HIMSS Interoperability Showcase in Hall G, Exhibit Booth #11000, ONC/FHA area.

MAeHC and MITRE to Demonstrate Comparison of the MAeHC Quality Data Center Meaningful Use Measure Reporting with PopHealth

Waltham, Mass., February 21, 2012 – The Massachusetts eHealth Collaborative (MAeHC), a non-profit pioneer and leader in healthcare delivery through health information technology, announced today that it has partnered with MITRE’s Center for Transforming Health, a not-for-profit organization chartered to work in the public interest, to demonstrate comparative measure results for meaningful use quality metrics reporting at the HIMSS 2012 Annual Conference & Exhibition in Las Vegas, NV from February 20-24.

To support the growing need for quality metrics in healthcare, the HIMSS Interoperability Showcase has dedicated this year’s exhibition to “Breaking Barriers to Interoperable Healthcare” to provide an educational forum for attendees by featuring health IT solutions from vendors and government-funded initiatives. This year’s solutions include the MAeHC QDC, a standards-based web application which securely extracts, aggregates, and analyzes patient level health information from EHR and HIE systems, and popHealth, an open-source clinical quality measure reporting reference implementation that works with a provider’s electronic health record (EHR) system, to evaluate quality measures for a population of patients, and share benchmarked results as well as observations and lessons learned for providers and vendors engaged in clinical data analytics.

“The future is already here, and it’s in data analytics,” said Micky Tripathi, CEO of the Massachusetts eHealth Collaborative. “The MAeHC QDC is a commercially-available, federally-certified data analytics solution which takes in and analyzes millions of patient records annually.  As a non-profit organization, we were delighted to accept the invitation to work with MITRE and benchmark our production QDC with the popHealth tool and to share the results at the HIMSS Interoperability Showcase.  As we will show at HIMSS, the tools are available today for healthcare providers to affordably bridge the gap between the limited capabilities of their independent clinical systems and the information mastery required for value based health care delivery such as accountable care and patient-centered medical home, but we’ve still got a long way to go before we can call these solutions plug-n-play.”

MAeHC delivers hands-on tactical support and sustainable strategies to help providers improve healthcare delivery within their own organizations and across communities. The QDC uniquely helps MAeHC connect communities by providing a comprehensive, on-demand data warehousing solution that seamlessly extracts and aggregates data from multiple clinical systems and provides timely feedback that helps clinical teams improve overall quality.

In 2009, ONC sponsored the development of the open-source popHealth tool by MITRE, a not-for-profit organization chartered to work solely in the public interest, to empower providers to easily perform their own clinical quality measures analysis as well as promote easier submission of meaningful use clinical quality measures to public health organizations. Both solutions support the electronic specifications for all 44 of the Meaningful Use Stage 1 clinical quality measures for eligible professionals. At the Interoperability Showcase, the QDC and popHealth solutions will pull from a common source set of HITSP C32 standard documents, to demonstrate the interoperability of these systems for producing Clinical Quality Measure results that streamline the submission of clinical quality measure reports for Meaningful Use and other purposes.

“Through our partnership with the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT, we are able to support enabling innovative solutions to address complex national problems,” said Joy Keeler Tobin, Chief of Health Informatics for MITRE’s Center for Transforming Health. “MITRE is excited about popHealth’s impact on the healthcare community and introducing a tool that easily reports and applies what is learned to the delivery of healthcare,” said Tobin. “We hope the joint popHealth and MAeHC QDC demonstrations will illustrate the true power of interoperability.”

Dose Management and Meaningful Use Incorporated into Version 6.1

Las Vegas, Nev., February 21, 2012 – Today at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) 2012 Annual Meeting FUJIFILM Medical Systems U.S.A., Inc. showcased the benefits of version 6.1, the latest addition to the company’s Synapse® RIS and Synapse® TeleRIS applications. Introduced in late 2011, version 6.1 includes graphical dashboards that provide end users with the ability to better monitor and manage performance in real time; Synapse® Financials for RIS, which provides a seamless option of incorporating practice management into the system; and advanced dose management features. By upgrading to this latest version, clinicians will enjoy an enhanced user experience and system performance.

“It’s our mission to make the patient care tasks of our end users easier by providing them with improved tools that address the varying issues and scenarios that arise throughout their day. The latest features found on Synapse RIS were designed with these users in mind,” said Jim Morgan, Fujifilm’s Vice President of Medical Informatics. “With the latest version of our RIS and TeleRIS, users can access tools designed to address Meaningful Use requirements and manage patient dose. They can also have access to a new financial management optimization feature designed to improve facility operations.”

Hospitals and radiology groups around the country including Diagnostic Professionals in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. have selected Fujifilm and are currently deploying Synapse RIS. “Analyzing our practice’s performance in real-time has always been a challenge,” says Claude Hanushak, COO at Diagnostic Professionals. “The new Analytics Dashboard on Synapse RIS will allow us to quickly and easily see what is happening and allow us to address minor issues before they become major problems.” Other facilities include Radiology Associates of Ocala Fla., the State of California, Good Samaritan Hospital, Health Village Imaging, Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates, William Newton Hospital, Greenwood County Hospital, Capital Health, and Kansas Imaging Consultants.

Highlighted features of Synapse RIS 6.1 include:

Synapse Financials for RIS: Next generation practice management solution that incorporates powerful billing and management tools to improve cash flow and increase insurance reimbursements. Data is shared between the software modules to eliminate dual data entry. The new application enables more efficient and accurate billing, while aiding the collection of imaging procedure payments. It also includes extensive custom interfacing features designed to improve staff productivity and a facility’s overall profitability.

Meaningful Use: Critical functionality for practices to be able to implement and attest to Meaningful Use and obtain EHR incentive payments. This module will be available to Synapse RIS customers as of July 2012. Fujifilm has already taken first steps by achieving Modular EHR Certification and plans to evolve the functionality to continue to meet requirements as they continue to change.

Graphical Dashboards: This feature provides clinical information such as patient wait times, and patient volume. This information is provided in real-time allowing clinicians to address issues immediately, rather than waiting for a weekly or monthly report.

Dose Management: Going beyond simple dose capture, Synapse RIS 6.1 provides recommended exposures (customized by the end user) with equipment specific weighting, patient level dose estimates, and maximum recommended exposure.

As with Fujifilm’s complete medical informatics product portfolio, version 6.1 for Synapse Information Systems is designed to also run in a virtualized environment which is proven to lower hardware acquisition/maintenance costs and reduce power consumption. It is expected to be available for delivery in the first quarter of 2012.

“The EHR Association Patient Safety Workgroup and the Executive Committee have worked diligently to gain consensus on our commitment to support a larger learning system in which potential safety issues in healthcare environments are reported and analyzed, including those associated with health information technology, in an effort to foster continuous system-wide improvement,” said Leigh Burchell, Vice President of Government Affairs for Allscripts and Chair of the Association‟s Public Policy Leadership Workgroup. Burchell went on to say, “We are committed, as an association, to partnering with the Office of the National Coordinator and other stakeholders in healthcare to standardize best practices in health IT safety, including definitions and processes, and we hope that our statement sets the stage for collaborative action around this issue.”
The statement, available on the EHR Association web site at http://www.himssehra.org/ASP/index.asp, describes the Association‟s objectives to identify and implement best practices that enable the safest possible development, adoption and use of health IT as an essential component of improving overall healthcare quality and safety, and promoting the use of health IT to identify and reduce areas of safety and/or quality risks.
The Association looks forward to continued engagement with the federal government and other stakeholders to identify specific actions that will expand and foster a broader “culture of safety.” Such a culture should incorporate multi-stakeholder engagement to address health IT patient safety as part of the broader patient safety focus, create a non-punitive environment where individuals feel safe in reporting events and “near misses”, and provide assurance of appropriate analyses by providers, health IT developers, patient safety organizations and other appropriate parties to determine the root causes of safety events.
“We, of course, read the Institute of Medicine report on health IT and patient safety with great interest when it was released,” said Carl Dvorak, Executive Vice President at Epic and Chair of the EHR Association, “and have engaged our member companies in many internal discussions as well as meetings with ONC and others to ensure that our collaborative efforts in this area will move the industry forward.”
Some specific activities that the Association recommends in the statement of commitment include one or more demonstration projects that engage all key stakeholders, participation in outreach and education about patient safety organizations (PSOs), collaborative work on a standardized EHR/health IT event reporting form, and promotion of industry best practices regarding health IT-related patient safety issues.

Navos Equips New Mental Health Facility with Comcast Business Class Ethernet Service; Saves Thousands and Reduces IT Backup Time

Secure, High-Speed Ethernet Connection Supports Fast, Efficient Patient Care

Las Vegas, NV – HIMSS Conference, February 20, 2012 – Comcast Corporation (Nasdaq: CMCSA, CMCSK), one of the nation’s leading providers of entertainment, information and communications products and services, today announced that Navos has upgraded its network infrastructure from a 1.5 Mbps T1 to a 50 Mbps Comcast Business Class Ethernet connection in order to enhance communications and improve patient care in its new 53,000 square foot outpatient campus, with plans to connect more facilities with Comcast in the future. Founded in 1966, Navos is a Seattle, Washington-based non-profit organization that improves the quality of life for people vulnerable to mental illness.

Before Navos opened its new outpatient services campus in 2011, the organization’s IT team evaluated its existing T1 connection and realized that this service was insufficient for meeting their increasing bandwidth demands. After researching other options, it was an easy decision for Navos to select Comcast’s Ethernet Private Line service because it offered higher bandwidth, a faster connection and would improve its staff’s ability to provide timely and efficient patient care.

“Comcast provides a secure point-to-point connection, plus it gives us the bandwidth we need at a reasonable price,” explained Navos’ Information Systems Manager Jeff Coleman. “If we had stayed with T1, the throughput would have been 10 percent of what we get with Comcast and I would have paid more each month. Now, we save thousands of dollars a year and get a connection that is 10 times faster. Plus, our staff can access and update patients’ records in minutes, which improves productivity and boosts patient care. In fact, I am so satisfied with Comcast that we plan to add a second connection to another campus, and I look forward to additional opportunities for growth and staff efficiency in the future.”

Before Navos implemented Comcast, their data back-up process was particularly long and frustrating. It required large amounts of bandwidth, taking 60 hours and causing various bottlenecks and slowdowns. Now that Comcast is in place, the backup process takes only 12 hours to complete. “No one dreads the process anymore,” Coleman commented.

With the new Ethernet connection, healthcare staff can quickly access electronic patient records, conduct fast file transfers of critical medical data and gather the mental health information needed from government, university and private institution websites without delays. The Comcast solution also enables video conferencing, which means that Navos staff members no longer need to drive from campus to campus for training, saving each person time, money and energy.

“We often hear from our healthcare customers that our secure point-to-point connection, which preserves patient privacy, is critical to support their organizations,” said Kevin O’Toole, SVP of product management and strategy, Comcast Business Services. “Healthcare IT departments report that they continually save time and resources by ensuring that data is only going to the places where it should be going, and they can confidently connect to the network without the added worry about privacy concerns.”
