Diversinet Clinical Communicator Enables Secure, Mobile Communications between Healthcare Professionals and Patients

Written by:

HIPAA-Compliant Application on MobiSecure® Platform
Increases Clinician Productivity, Improves Patient Outcomes

TORONTO, March 22, 2011 – Healthcare professionals now have a solution for securely and remotely communicating with patients via mobile devices and tablets, thanks to the Clinical Communicator application announced today by Diversinet Corp. (TSX Venture: DIV, OTCBB: DVNTF).

Clinical Communicator leverages the power and unique functionality of Diversinet’s field-proven MobiSecure® Publisher and MobiSecure SMS, enabling physicians, nurses and other clinicians to communicate securely with their patients via mobile devices and tablets. The mobile client and Web interfaces for healthcare professionals are automated and user-friendly. Patients can continue to use existing MobiSecure mobile clients, such as mClient and mText.

Clinical Communicator is a HIPAA-compliant application that makes it possible for clinicians to securely:

  • Send messages and notices to patients
  • Reply to patients’ questions
  • View and update patient health information
  • Schedule, view, confirm and cancel appointments
  • Send notices to other internal clinicians
  • Send summaries of lab and test results
  • Enable secure remote monitoring via interface with third-party biomedical devices
  • Enable real-time video calling
  • Configure automatic reminders and alerts

Benefits for patients include ability to use smart phones and tablets to ask questions and reply to clinicians; receive automated medication reminders, health tips and alerts; manage their personal health information; view and share health insurance information; schedule appointments; check in; and request prescription renewal.

“Healthcare organizations often rely on fragmented and disparate systems with information that resides in silos, making secure collaboration and communication difficult,” said Diversinet CEO Albert Wahbe. “The Clinical Communicator gives time-challenged health professionals a tool to deliver the right information at the right time, making it faster and easier to communicate with patients and collaborate across the healthcare ecosystem.”

Clinical Communicator will be available for trials in June. Diversinet will market the application through partnerships with large healthcare organizations, including providers and pharmaceutical companies. Clinical Communicator is also suitable for drug and clinical trials and for case and disease management. It is designed to help healthcare organizations fulfill Meaningful Use (MU) requirements.

Diversinet will demonstrate Clinical Communicator in Booth 4191 in the Wireless Health Pavilion at the CTIA Wireless convention at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla., from March 22-24.

ACS, A Xerox Company, to Acquire CredenceHealth, Inc.

Written by:

ACS, A Xerox Company, has acquired CredenceHealth, Inc. – a provider of software that captures and analyzes patient data – helping healthcare providers improve patient care and meet meaningful use requirements.

Coupling CredenceHealth’s clinical surveillance tools with ACS’ core suite of managed care solutions, the company will offer MIDAS+Live, a cloud solution that integrates with a hospital’s Electronic Medical Record system and actively monitors patient data, providing caregivers real-time information.

ACS, A Xerox Company, to Acquire CredenceHealth, Inc.; Adds Cloud-Based Solution to Help Healthcare Providers Enhance Quality of Care

DALLAS, March 21, 2011 – Affiliated Computer Services, Inc. (ACS), A Xerox Company (NYSE: XRX), today announced a definitive agreement to acquire CredenceHealth, Inc., creating a simple way for healthcare providers to use patient information to predict and prevent complications.

Nashville, Tenn.-based CredenceHealth provides software that captures and analyzes patient data to assist hospitals, health plans, and providers improve quality of care and compliance with meaningful use regulations.

By integrating CredenceHealth’s clinical surveillance tools with ACS’ core suite of managed care solutions under the Midas software brand, ACS will now offer a cloud-based solution that actively monitors patient data – original diagnosis, laboratory and radiology reports, medications, vital signs, etc. This data is   accessible to hospital staff from any Internet browser using a secure password-protected system.

The new solution, named Midas+ Live, works with a hospital’s Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system, and alerts caregivers when any of thousands of possible changes in a patient’s condition happen simultaneously – such as an increase in temperature or low blood pressure, combined with various lab and radiology results. This information can then be used to inform the caregiver prior to a decline in the patient’s condition.

“Through our advanced technology that analyzes the insights found inside the massive amounts of information regarding a patient’s condition, we’re giving healthcare providers real-time relevant knowledge so they can better focus on giving patients the care they need,” said Tom Simas, managing director for ACS’ Midas+ solutions.

The CredenceHealth software-as-a-service offering is certified by the Office of the National Coordinator as a clinical quality measures reporting module for meaningful use. Therefore, providers using Midas+ Live will be eligible for stimulus dollars from the HITECH and American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

“We have experienced great gains in quality outcomes and efficiencies since adding CredenceHealth’s tools to our organization. Our colleagues benefit from having this information and intelligence at their fingertips,” said Scott Raynes, president and CEO, NorthCrest Medical Center in Springfield, Tenn. “The addition of CredenceHealth to our existing ACS Midas+ processes and products creates a powerful combination, helping us accomplish all of the new regulatory requirements, freeing us to deliver even better care to our patients.”

All CredenceHealth products and services will be integrated into Midas+ solutions, which help to improve staff efficiency, enhance patient safety and increase hospital profitability. CredenceHealth’s management team and employees will join ACS. Justin Lanning, CEO, CredenceHealth, will serve as vice president of business development, ACS Midas+.

Avaya Survey Reveals Healthcare IT Professionals’ Opinions on Latest Technologies and Challenges

Written by:

Collaborative communications is the key factor in driving efficient patient care in healthcare, reveals survey conducted by Avaya at HIMSS 2011

Basking Ridge, NJ Avaya, Inc., a global leader in business collaboration systems, software and services, today announced the results of a Healthcare Technology Outlook survey it recently conducted at the 2011 HIMSS Conference and Exhibition in February. Avaya offers an array of healthcare communications solutions incorporating unified communications and contact center technologies, serving more than 5,000 healthcare providers globally.

According to the survey, improving patient care and satisfaction through collaborative communications – which includes mobile communications, automated outreach, and technologies for driving workflows – was top of mind for most healthcare technology professionals. When asked “What results do you expect to gain from your technology investments?” the majority (74 percent) cited “improved level of care and response to patients.”  And after respondents were asked what they considered to be the most beneficial value of mobile communications, the majority chose: “improving patient care by improving response time to patients (67 percent).”

The survey, conducted onsite at the Avaya booth at the HIMSS event and hosted by market research firm Exhibit Surveys, Inc., asked healthcare technology professionals their thoughts on various collaborative technologies and their impact in healthcare environments.

Overextended staff is top concern amongst healthcare tech professionals

When it comes to the healthcare technology industry’s thoughts on the obstacles to providing better patient care, Avaya’s survey found that respondents focused primarily on staff issues. Asked about the biggest challenge healthcare providers currently face, the top answer (32 percent) cited “overextended clinical staff spending too much time performing non-patient care activities.” This was followed by “poor or lack of effective communication amongst staff,” and “bottlenecks in patient flow.”

“With these survey results, we’re seeing concerns among healthcare technology professionals about staffing and time being spent away from patients, which greatly impacts patient care and efficiency,” said Bruce Wallace, Avaya’s healthcare practice leader. “To address these challenges head-on, industry professionals are turning to communications solutions that drive faster and more productive collaboration, which makes all the difference in an industry where every second counts.”

The survey also asked about video-based communications in the healthcare industry. Survey respondents felt this technology could make the most significant impact in two key areas — Physician Consultations and Distance Telemedicine – both of which tied for first place in terms of impact. According to Wallace, video adds an important new dimension to the healthcare industry, with group consultations gaining real-time visuals and enhanced document and image sharing capabilities.  This can speed and improve collaboration for doctors, medical professionals and patients.

Looking ahead, healthcare professionals were asked which issues facing their hospital or facility would be most important to address in the next three years, considering Meaningful Use and Accountable Care requirements. According to the survey, “communication and workflow integration into Healthcare Information Systems (HIS)” was ranked as the most important (with 95 percent responding ‘extremely important’ or ‘very important’), followed by automated patient followup and mutli-modal collaboration.

Avaya offers a variety of healthcare collaboration solutions including the recently announced Avaya Mobile Device Checkout – a secure mobility solution for healthcare organizations that uses personalized WLAN devices – and Avaya Patient Followup, which uses automated outreach to call and follow up with patients after their discharge from a hospital. For more information on these and other Avaya healthcare solutions, please visit avaya.com/healthcare.

Written by:

With the launch of the meridianEMR Meaningful Use Tracking Board today, meridianEMR clients have a powerful new tool to simplify the process of attesting to Meaningful Use. Each client now has their own personal Tracking Board integrated into their system to provide status on all the Meaningful Use criteria automatically and in real-time.

This data-rich, interactive tool analyzes and calculates each core and each optional item in the Meaningful Use criteria. It provides an easy-to-read visual snapshot of each physician’s status. The goal is to have each item appear in green (denoting completion) over a continuous 90 day period. Once this is accomplished, the client can go the CMS website to attest to Meaningful Use for 2011.

The meridianEMR Meaningful Use Tracking Board was tested by several clients before full-scale rollout. Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive due to the tool’s automatic nature and helpfulness in gauging Meaningful Use status.
