Editor’s Notes: My Twitter friend, Steve Sisko (@ShimCode if you prefer), sent me his list of unofficial #HIT100 rankings and asked if I wanted to publish them. Always someone interested in a sneak peak at the final results, I was of course happy to publish his findings. Plus, it will be fun to compare them against @TheEHRGuy’s final list.
I made my feelings on the #HIT100 list quite clear in past years. I don’t feel any different now. The list as a whole is quite interesting and a great way to discover new and interesting people in healthcare IT. However, specific rank on the list is meaningless to me since it can easily be gamed. For example, if you nominate a lot of other people, then you’re very likely to get reciprocal nominations and be at the top of the list. Not to mention, with just my own Health IT related Twitter accounts I could get someone to the top 50 if I’d wanted. Although, I didn’t. I think I nominated two people who bought me chocolate shakes and cheesecake in the past. I guess you now know how to win me over.
What I think would be interesting is to dive into this list a little deeper and see who’s new, who dropped from the list and also to dive deeper into the story of the people on this list. Sounds like a good future project for my blogs. I might start with those on the bottom of the list.
Without further ado, enjoy the unofficial #HIT100 list.
For those who simply must know, here are the unofficial 2014 #HIT100 rankings.

Methodology and Disclaimers
- This is an unofficial list.
- Selected all tweets tagged with #HIT100 from 7/1/14 (12:00 EST) thru 7/8/14 (13:00 EST) that complied with the essence of the requested format and general rules.
- Eliminated all duplicate votes made by the same person for the same nominee
- Didn’t combine people with multiple Twitter accounts. Like @KathyMcCoy/@HealthFusionKMc and @techguy/@ehrandhit and
- Didn’t exclude anyone who had less than 6 months on Twitter. That would take a little scripting or manual effort I don’t have right now.
- Didn’t exclude anyone who isn’t “an active participant of both the #HealthIT and #HITsm channels” as I’m not sure how to determine that without being subjective.
- Also, note that comparison to 2013 rankings has a few holes in it due to people changing their handles since 2013. Like @Farzad_MD /@Farzad_ONC and a couple others.
- Accounts with same vote count were sorted alphabetically.

Wow! That was fast John!
BTW, with a couple exceptions due to name changes, you can see who’s new to the HIT100 list based on an “N/A’ in the column titled “2013 Rank.” Turns out @laurencstill is the highest ranked, new human/individual entrant to the list. I certainly think she’s deserving.
I have all kinds of interesting stats and seeing more as I play with the data. Perhaps I can share more if and when I have time to get more into the data.
Steve,
Thanks, but I’d argue that you were fast. I’m not sure how you got all this data together so quickly. All I did was copy and paste and add a few comments at the top. Although, I’ve posted a few blog posts in my life.
Good point about the N/A column. Maybe I’ll start my #HIT100 Feature posts there. @laurencstill is definitely deserving. Her and @juliewmaas were my great finds at HIMSS 2014.
I was just thinking, 2 of the 3 past winners have been interviewed on my blogs:
@healthcarewen – http://www.emrandehr.com/2013/03/04/healthcarewen-dr-wen-dombrowski-hitsm-spotlight/
@EMRAnswers – http://www.emrandehr.com/2012/07/20/emr-advocate-tops-the-hit100/
What do you think of these types of interviews? Are they valuable?
@Symplur + Some Scripts + A little grunt work made it pretty easy.
Took me about 2 hrs in 15 minute chunks. And now I have the raw data cleaned up and plan to add/derive some metadata. I’ll probably post the data file this weekend. Trying to figure out how to use Twitters REST API to quickly get some additional quantitative stats like length of time on Twitter, number of followers each voter and nominee has, etc.
But that day job and family and all keep getting in the way. 🙂
You should ask @laurencstill for help with it. She’s a hacking ninja when it comes to APIs and things like that.
“Ties were sorted alphabetically”
BS! I’m sure it’s just the patriarchal cis-driven sexism culture keeping me and Linda and….oh, guess it really is alphabetical. Nice work Steve. If you don’t want to mess with the Twitter API, look at kimonolabs to cheat and make your own. You can also do some limited scripting and websrapping through google docs/spreadsheet (and then pull that info with google app’s API, which is more stable), which is what I’ve been doing over the past few years, mostly cause I’m lazy. I prefer to defer to someone else’s methodology for the ranking portion.
What I really want to end up with is an interactive map that shows where HITsm people are based on current GPS, only defaulting to their location field if it’s not available. I really just need to dedicate a weekend to this.
Thanks Lauren…I have played with Kimonolabs product. It is pretty cool.
As far as alpha sort goes, you’re right! It’s a vast XY conspiracy against XX. (Please don’t tell my wife and daughters though…they’ll knee me in the groin.) BTW, I noted this aberration in blog post last year. See “’A’ is better than ‘Z’” in this post: http://shimcode.blogspot.com/2013/07/thoughts-on-hit100-good-bad-ugly-part-2.html
I’m now reconsidering significant life plans. Should I ever get married, my partner and I will both be changing our last name to something more ranking-favored.
I recently picked a PCP out of those who accepted my insurance, who was the first listed with a slavic surname, which happened to start with B. Another recently chosen doc? C.
When I was young I always thought it was strange why so many companies were named “AAA ”
And of course there’s “ZZZZ Best” – that was a screwy story for those who remember that guy. I guess it pays to be first or last in line? 🙂
